New York's 47th Annual Drama Desk Awards Show
Uses Apogee's Legendary AE-5 Loudspeakers
Petaluma, CA – For the second consecutive year Apogee's flagship AE-5 Series loudspeakers provided the sound at the live, two-hour television broadcast of the 47th Annual Drama Desk Awards in New York.
The Drama Desk Awards honor Broadway and Off-Broadway productions in multiple categories, and are selected by theater reporters, editors, and critics from more than 200 publications. For the seventh consecutive year, NY1 News provided live coverage of the event in its entirety. Thirteen/WNET, the PBS flagship public television station in New York City, re-broadcast the show, held May 19 at the Concert Hall in F.H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, at Lincoln Center.
New York sound designer Bernard Fox selected Apogee loudspeakers for the live sound system: four Apogee AE-5s, four Apogee AE-5NCs, and four Apogee SSMs across the front of the stage.
"I've used Apogee speakers since 1989 for countless projects, including many Broadway musicals," said Fox, who also performed the Drama Desk Award's show on-air mix. "At this show we had to deal with a very reverberant room and flutter echo, so we wanted to keep the energy off of the side walls. The precise directionality of the AE-5NCs made this easy to achieve."

The AE-5 is a processor-controlled, bi-amped, two-way (12" cone driver and 1" compression driver) system; the AE-5NC is identical except that it uses a narrow conical horn to achieve long-throw, tight-pattern high frequency dispersion. The SMM-Series (dual 4.5" cone driver, 1" titanium tweeter) loudspeaker is designed to provide high acoustical output in a compact size.
