New York State Seal of Biliteracy Requirements
In order for a student to receive the 2 points for the World Language performance tasks he/she must complete the following:
- Movie task in which the student chooses a particular region, city, country to research and presents that information orally, in a prepared presentation. (See attached)
- Student will select one of the subtopics from the movie project and write a comparative essay, blog, or article in which he/she compares and contrasts what they have discovered about that area, with what we experience in the United States. Students must have 2 articles and/or audio source(s) from which they will site information.
- Student must submit a minimum of 6 Interpretive Task Guides, to his/her teacher/advisor, for each reading and auditory source used for the writing assignment. (See attached guide) This research will be used to create the Movie Project and Presentational Writing.
- Students will meet with his/her teacher/advisor quarterly so as to ensure that all deadlines and requirements are being met.
- Student will meet with the NYSSOB Committee to present his/her findings, at which time the committee will have the opportunity to pose questions to each student in the target language.
These performance tasks will encompass all three modes of communication; Interpretive, Interpersonal and Presentational. Additionally, these tasks meet the ACTFL standard for World Language; Communications, Comparisons, Culture, Connections and Communities.
NYSSOB World Language Integrated Performance Tasks
Presentational Speaking
- You are the guide on a virtual trip through (city/region). During your trip, you should highlight the following for the audience:
- Landmarks/points of reference/famous cultural spots
- Historic figures from that place (heroes/politicians/ activists/etc.)
- Pastimes
- Traditions (holidays) specific to that region
- Traditional foods
- Educational system
- Specific types of architecture/famous architects
- Art/literature/music that originates from that region
- Problems facing the region (global, economic, etc.)
- Healthcare system
- Role of religion
Each student must create a presentation using a movie making software in which he/she narrates, in the target language, about the aforementioned topics. Presentation must include authentic photos and authentic music for the background.
Interpersonal Speaking
- Each candidate will be asked about his/her region, in the target language, during his/her interview with the NYSSOB committee.
Presentational Writing
- Student will select one of the subtopics from the movie assessment and write a comparative essay, blog or article he/she compares and contrasts what they have discovered about that area, with what we experience in the United States. (Cultural Practices/Perspectives).
Interpretive
- Student must submit a minimum of six Interpretive Task Guides, one for each of the sources he/she intends to use, to his/her teacher/advisor in which he/she has printed the article, a written summary in the target language, along with the bibliography and photos.
These performance tasks will encompass all three modes of communication; Interpretive, Interpersonal and Presentational. Additionally, these tasks meets the ACTFL standards for World Language; Communication, Comparisons, Culture, Connections and Communities at the Intermediate High level. Please see attached rubrics.
