The minutes were approved and were provided to the Website Structure Committee for inclusion to the PTA section of the school’s website.

Report of Treasurer

Kathy McCleary provided the meeting with an income statement. The main changes from last month are funds received for the Chinese Class, more fall fundraiser funds and the school store and school supplies (although each item will be paid out to the Chinese instructor, 30% fall fundraiser goes back to Harmony MS and the school store and school supplies purchase). Total income for as of May 19 is 13,506, much of that will be used for invoices.

Report of the Principal

Mrs. Gladden reported that SOL testing has started and will be completed on June 9th. The April HMS newsletter provides the dates for each grade’s SOL dates.

Interims will go out Friday, May 20th.

Yearbooks are in and will be ready for distribution at the end of the year.

There is an online parent survey that is anonymous that Ms. Gladden strongly encourages parents to please take as it helps provide important feedback from improving school performance. Tom Regan will post it and send out a special Harmony Hornets with the link.

Mrs. Gladden also requested that the PTA establish the magazine sales dates now to help with the other fundraiser dates for band boosters and other fund raising organizations. The PTA determined that the kickoff will be September 12th and run until October 20th.

There is a chorus concert on June 9th and a band concert on June 7th.

Back to school night will be held the week after Labor Day.

Field Day planning needs to occur early next year even setting a date as soon as school is back in session.

The Track update – Construction for the track will start once the ground dries out.

Rising 6th grade orientation will be August 25th from 8:30 – 12:30 pm. Parents can join the students at 11:30 am.

On June 6-8, 8th graders will go to Woodgrove (by team) for orientation.

The 8th Grade Awards Ceremony will be held on June 8 at Woodgrove High School at 6:30 pm.

Standing Committee Reports

  • Events Committee–Kim Chatfield sent in a report to update PTA on 8th Grade Ice Cream social. She stated that the 8th graders will eat lunch at their normal time, 1:20 pm and then will go to the ice cream social at 1:30 in the hall outside the Aux gym. Ice cream is ordered and will be delivered before the party. The students can also go out on the blacktop and play basketball or get yearbooks signed. There will be a DJ from 1:30 until end of school in Aux. gym. She needs parent volunteers to help with set up, serving and clean up.
  • Fundraisers – Armchair fundraiser –Sherry Zoldos reported that the Spring fundraiser did not receive a great deal of support. Approximately $650 dollars was raised. There was discussion about running this fundraiser in conjunction with the magazine sales, so if selling magazines is not something the families can support, they can opt for a donation to the school.
  • Spirit Wear and School Store- Lauren Lynhamreceived 155 orders for shirts for rising 6th graders and will distribute them to school representatives for distribution in June. School supply orders are due May 20th. School supplies will be delivered to the school by 6:30 am on the day of the 6th grade orientation.

Special Committee Reports

  • LEAP –Maura Walsh-Copeland reported there is a new LEAP Board. This past month LEAP explored multicultural education - when bridging the gaps in a multi-cultural school community, little things can produce big results. Ms. Copeland indicated that the president of the Minority Student Achievement Advisory Committee (MSAAC) said he would like to see MSAAC, LEAP and the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) cooperate more in the future and suggested that these representatives become part of the PTA to help with more cooperation and information sharing.

A full report is posted on the LEAP News page of the Harmony PTA website.

  • Affinity Programs – Lauren will email Ashby the receipt for the shirts because she can get points from Campbell soup with it. Box tops are still coming in.
