COURSE GUIDELINES FOR 7th Grade ENGLISH 2015-2016

Course Description: Seventh Grade Language Arts is designed to involve the student in applying reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing skills in an independent manner through meaningful interdisciplinary tasks. Students will continue to develop an appreciation for literature through the study of literary elements in classic and contemporary selections. Emphasis is placed on moving from the literal to the abstract in the students’ critical thinking skills and in the use of language.With this in mind all students will be able to achieve success utilizing critical thinking, analyzing, evaluating, problem-solving, and reading and writing skills.

Methods of Instruction: Students will be engaged in the learning process by:

  • Individual exploration and research
  • Group lectures and discussions
  • Small group team oriented activities
  • Hands-on activities such as projects and portfolio work
  • Oral presentations
  • Written compositions

In order to effectively reach these goals the following are to be brought to class every day:

Class materials -textbook, novel, worksheets, notes, homework, etc.

2- inch Three-ring Binder that contains loose-leaf notebook paper (college ruled) (Can be the same binder as your other classes, scheduled for that day)

Dividers (5-pack- THE ENTIRE PACK OF TABS WILL BE USED FOR THIS CLASS ONLY. If using the binder for other classes for that day, student will need to buy an additional pack OR purchase a pack of 10 dividers )

5-10 Sheet Protectors

3x5 Index Cards – 2 packs of (White Lined)

Pencil (s) (#2 pencils or mechanical pencils with .07 lead)

Colored pens (red, purple, dark pink, or green for correcting assignments in class)

Highlighters (standard colors: yellow, pink, green, blue, etc.)

Mini Stapler & Staples, Notebook 3 Hole Puncher

.NOTE: Any additional items will be assigned in class and students will be given two to three class meetings to bring the materials needed.Please be aware that having your supplies in class every day is a huge part of the PARTICIPATING GRADE FOR THIS CLASS.

EVALUATION

TESTS AND QUIZZES, CLASSWORK, AND HOMEWORK:

Students will be evaluated using a 21 week semester system. All grades will be posted to Focus and available for student and parent review 24hrs, 7 days a week. Student/Parent Progress Report conferences are held ONCE DURING EACH Semester The following grading scale will be used in the determination of grades for all Projects (15%), Tests (25%), Quizzes (20%), Benchmark Testing/NWEA (5%), and Extended Learning Academy (5%):

100%-90% = A89%-80% = B 79%-73% = C 72%-70% = C- 69%-0% = F

NOT TURNED IN = 0% INCOMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS = 0%

CLASS WORK (20%) AND HOMEWORK (10%)

Most homework, unless otherwise stated in class, assignments will be evaluated based on the following system:

Check Plus = 100% (5 points) Check Minus = 20% (1 point)

Check = 75% (3.5 points) NOT TURNED IN = 0% (0 points)

RULES AND REGULATIONS for MIDDLE SCHOOL 7th GRADE ENGLISH

In order for every student to get the maximum benefit from the course offered, the following rules will be observed and enforced:

1.Every student will be in his or her seat DAILY before the start of class.

2.All students are to have their own supplies daily.

3.All assignments are due on the due date, however if a student needs to turn in an assignment for late credit, 10% will be taken off of the total grade for each class meeting the past the assignment due date. A student will have THIRD class meetings beyond the due date to turn in late assignments for late credit. After the THIRD class meeting the assignment can only be turned in after a one-to-one conference with student and/or parent.

NOTE: In the case of an excused absence, the homework missed is due preferably the day you return, but not later than the day after you return. It is the student’s responsibility to request missing assignments on the day of re-admittance.

4.The only conversation necessary in class is between teacher and student or as participation in class

discussions. After one verbal warning, the student can be issued a detention or other consequence.

5.Homework, projects, and test dates will be assigned. Quizzes are generally unannounced.

6.Students may confer about homework assignments, but are not allowed to copy each other’s work.

Plagiarized homework will receive ZERO % of credit for all students involved.

7.Students who earn a 60% and below on any Progress Report will be required to attend weekly

tutoring. The weekly tutoring attendance will be required until the STUDENT EARNS A GRADE OF

70% OR HIGHER ON THE NEXT PROGRESS REPORT.

8. The honor system is used when students are correcting each other’s work as well as when stating their

grade to the professor. NOTE:Giving an incorrect grade either to you, or to another student, verbally or in

writingwill result in the student receiving a request for Parent Conference with the Teacher and Principal. The

assignment will be given a failing grade.

9. Students are not allowed to perform personal grooming during class time. This means no combs, mirror,

brushes, make-up, or other personal grooming items will be out and visible during class times.

10. Students are to show respect for themselves and others. There will be NO Cursing, NO slang, or other

disrespectful language used during class time.

11. Students are not allowed to place their heads down on the desks. (i.e laying your head down on your

arms, then placing your head and folded arms on the desk)

12. Students are not allowed to leave the classroom unless given permission by the teacher. (i.e. no

bathroom orwater breaks during class period, unless it is an EXTREME EMERGENCY)
