Navo Middle School 7th Grade Elective Courses

Advisory - The Advisory Period is designated time that allows for additional support in meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of students. This would include activities and lessons that provide skills-based intervention, enrichment and character education.

Athletics - Athletics is for students who wish to participate in competitive volleyball, football, basketball, and/or track/cross country. It is part of the school day and will fulfill the PE requirement. Practices can be before or after school required and parents provide all transportation to practices and after games. A physical exam is required prior to the beginning of the school year in order to participate in athletics. Coaches have the physical form that needs to be completed by a doctor.

PE Wellness – The physical education class provides each student with the opportunity to participate in a program with a variety of skill developments, team sports, individual sports and physical fitness activities. The students receive instruction in rules, skills and strategies associated with different sports. Students are required to dress out in PE clothes and participate in activities daily.

Tennis- Tennis class provides students with an opportunity to learn fundamentals and skills in the sport of Tennis. Tennis is a non-competitive class that is offered during the school day that allows students the opportunity to gain a PE credit while focusing on an individual sport. Students are required to dress out and participate in activities daily.

Art 7^ teaches or improves artistic skills through drawing, painting, clay, sculpture, printmaking, and much more. This course emphasizes understanding and appreciation of self and others through art culture, history, and heritage. Supplies required.

Band 7^ is for students who have successfully completed beginner band class and who play at an intermediate level. 7th graders will be in either Symphonic or Concert band, according to their playing ability. Band members are required to participate in extracurricular activities throughout the year including concerts, UIL contests, and football games.

Choir 7^ students gain experience with many musical styles and will learn proper vocal technique and sight reading skills. Girls with advanced skills may audition for the Varsity Choir. Boys’ Choir is open to all boys in 7th and 8th grade. No musical experience is required. Students are required to participate in extracurricular activities throughout the year including concerts and UIL contests.

Orchestra 7^ is for students who have had two years of classroom or private instruction on a stringed instrument. Technique, care of instruments, music reading skills, music sensitivity, performance, and creative self-expression are integral parts of the curriculum. Orchestra members are required to participate in extracurricular activities throughout the year including concerts and UIL contests.

Theater 7 introduces students to dramatic performance in the one-year class. Students explore all areas of theatre arts including basic stage movement, voice, pantomime, improvisation, choral reading, script writing, performance, and technical theatre. Full Year Theater is for students who successfully completed theater in the 6th grade and have a strong desire to perform.

Spanish I – 7- (two years, 7th and 8th grade) This course emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish for communication. Students learn basic grammar and vocabulary and study the culture of Hispanic countries. This course is the first half of the high school Spanish I and is therefore rigorous. Students will be required to complete the second half of the class in 8th grade. Students must take two additional years of Spanish in high school to earn credit for this class to count towards graduation requirements.

Desktop Communications (by application only) Students design, write, edit, photograph and produce the school yearbook. Students work independently and in a team setting, meet deadlines, are self-disciplined and responsible. YEAR LONG COURSE

Gateway to Technology 1 Students use a project-based curriculum to challenge their imaginations. Students will envision, design, and test their ideas in robotics and automation, design and modeling using advanced modeling software current used in industrial applications. (.5 high school credit) YEAR LONG COURSE

Principles of Human Services This course will enable students to investigate careers in the human services career cluster, including counseling and mental health, early childhood development, family and community, and personal care services. Areas of study will include goal setting, nutrition, clothing construction, stress and crisis management, child development, personal care services, and meal preparation and nutrition. (1.0 high school credit) YEAR LONG COURSE

Principals of Information Technology students apply learned skills to address business applications of emerging technologies, create word-processing documents, develop a spread sheet, formulate a database, and make an electronic presentation using appropriate software , explore careers in IT fields, and teaches computer literacy. (1 high school credit). YEAR LONG COURSE

College and Career Readiness This course is designed to help students improve their learning effectiveness, attitudes, and motivation, including time management, concentration, , textbook study methods, test taking strategies, and critical thinking skills. This course helps to prepare students to be career and college ready. This course will expose students to a broad range of career opportunities as well as college. SEMESTER COURSE

Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness This course allows students to use principles of lifetime wellness and nutrition to help them make informed choices that promote wellness. They will focus on understanding wellness, nutrition, and the use of science and technology in food management. They will also investigate the field of food safety and sanitation practices. Students will also prepare menus, food and explore careers in the field of nutrition and wellness. (.5 high school credit) SEMESTER COURSE

Touch System Data Entry Students learn basic keyboarding, learn how to use 10 key, produce resumes, cover letters and business documents. There is heavy emphasis on Microsoft Word.(.5 high school credit) SEMESTER COURSE

Music Appreciation- Students are introduced to music theory, composition, and the history of music. The class covers different decades and all genres. SEMESTER COURSE
