Chapter 893 – Springfield, Virginia

Minutes – October 12, 2011

President Jim Delgado called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the American Legion in Springfield. 37 members and 3 guests attended. Chaplain Margaret Yowell gave the invocation and led the pledge of allegiance.

Reading of the Minutes from the September meeting was waived and they were approved.

President’s Report President told the members that Barbara MacDonald was not able to continue as Chair of the Alzheimer’s Committee, but Margaret Yowell has agreed to step up and take the position, in addition to her other duties. Dick Gallagher, chair of the Finance Committee, will present the proposed budget for 2012 at the November meeting. The Board has waived the Standing Operating Procedures that require this action in December, and moved the presentation and vote to November.

Treasurer’s Report As of the August 23, 2011 report, we spent $468.80 in August, received $932.16, leaving $14503.23 in the accounts. (report attached A)

STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS

National Legislation Charlie Delaplane moved and it was approved to endorse aNARFE PAC distribution to Gerry Connelly. (report attached B)

State Legislation Irene Mieldsreported on the surplus in the State Revenue and proposed plans for spending it. She also mentioned the change in rules for abortion clinics that require them to be more like hospitals which will raise their costs. (report attached C)

Membership Committee Doris Lama noted the chapter currently has 1707 members.

Program Pat Harahan reported that LTC Kevin Moore will speak at the October meeting on the expansion of the Ft. Belvoir Hospital; November will be Jim Mayer from the Wounded Warrior Project. (report attached D)

OTHER COMMITTEE REPORTS

Hospitality Bev Clemsen reminded members to send in their reservations for the Holiday Party at Waterford.

Lunch Bunch Eleanor Erickson reported that they will meet at the Blue Pearl before the November Chapter meeting

Fairfax County Senior Council Jesse Hill reported the next meeting will be 28 October at 1000 in Lincolnia Center and then 18 November. Also mentioned the American Legion Christmas Party will be on December 2, 2011. (report attached E)

OLD BUSINESS

Nominations Committee: Charlie Delaplane reported the slate for election. The committee was unsuccessful filling the vacancies, but the incumbents are willing to continue to serve in their positions. Slate, as presented, is:

President – Jim Delgado

Secretary – Beth Lynch

Treasurer – Jim Wagner

Area A Director – Earl Levy

At-Large Director – Beverly Clemsen

Donations will be collected for Homeless Veterans at the November and December meetings. The items will be delivered to the VA Medical Center for distribution.

Business meeting adjourned at 2:20pm.

PROGRAM LTC Kevin Moore, Deputy Commander for Education, Research and Training at the Belvoir community Hospital spoke about the changes and expansion that are happening at the new facility.
