VOM 2016- Sense of Shame

Lesson Objectives:

  • To gain a deeper understanding of the definition of Sense of Shame and how this value can be applied to conserve the environment
  • To describe what it means to have a sense of shame for individual action on the environment
  • To translate what they know into practical actions so that they can live out the value

Explain what having a sense of shame means
  • A person with a sense of shame shows disgust for what is wrong and is humble in admitting one’s mistakes.
  • The sense of shame is moral compass which guides a person to behave properly and gives him/her the self-discipline to do the right thing.
Explain to students that through this lesson, they will learn to see that the actions of humans many atimes, act against the environment and are not deemed right. Through the lesson, engage students to reflect how some of their actions are not deemed right and how they should behave properly towards the environment and have the self-discipline to do the right thing towards the environment. / Slide 2: What is sense of shame?

Teacher to share some statistical data to raise students’ awareness in the ever-increasing energy, water and food wastage in Singapore in the past decade.
Teacher to stress the urgent need for self-reflection and intervention before it’s too late.
Teacher to make use of the poor living conditions in Africa to make students reflect on their own behaviours that leads to wastage, and to guide them in thinking about possible interventions to minimise wastage in school / at home. / Slide 6 to 10
5-7 min / Conclusion and reflection
Using the famous quote from the movie ‘Lorax’ and the renowned international campaign for ‘Earth Hour’, teacher to stress the importance of individual consistent effort as the starting point in the environment conservation campaign.
Consolidate discussions with the following points:
  1. Global climate change will affect people and the environment in many ways. Some of these impacts, like stronger hurricanes and severe heat waves, could be life threatening. Others, like spreading weeds, will be less serious.
  2. We should develop empathy for the environment.
  3. We should move beyond empathy and take actions to bring about real change.
  4. We must never be afraid to do the right thing even when it is not the most popular choice.
  5. Everyone has a part to play in conserving the environment.
  6. Small efforts can make a big difference.
Explain the desired actions of students
  • The Earth is our home.
  • Reflect on one’s action on the environment regularly.
  • Be prudent with the use of resources at all times.
  • Protecting our environment require our collective efforts.
  • We can live out the value by moving beyond empathy and take actions to bring about real change.

Making of Environmental Pledge using recycled egg cartons
  1. Cut out a small flower shape using the paper egg carton
  2. Colour it with your favourite colours
  3. Write the action that one has done against the environment all these while.
  4. Write down a short pledge for onself (on one of the petals of the flower) to commit to environment conservation
  5. Stick the artefact on the Eco noticeboard to remind yourself constantly of the promise you have made
