1.  JOB IDENTIFICATION
Job Title: Clinical Teaching Fellow (Cardiovascular sciences/Cardiothoracic surgery)
Department(s): West of Scotland Heart and Lung Centre
2. JOB PURPOSE
The duties will be to assist the Medical Education team in all aspects of teaching of 4th & 5th Year University of Glasgow medical students. This includes their induction, administration of the programme, delivery of teaching and assessment of their performance.
It is anticipated that the Clinical Teaching Fellow will have access to 1 practical session per week in addition to 1 outpatient clinic or MDT meeting.
It is also anticipated that the post-holder will be supported in attaining a University-based qualification in Medical Education.
3. ORGANISATIONAL POSITION
The post holders will be clinically and managerially, responsible to the Director of Medical Education.
4. SCOPE AND RANGE
The West of Scotland Heart and Lung Centre opened at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in summer
2008. It provides cardiothoracic surgery, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and complex cardiac
device services for most of the West of Scotland. As part of this development the hospital became a heart
attack centre and now offers primary PCI on a 24/7 basis to a catchment population of 1.6M. The Heart
and Lung Centre also houses the National Services for Advanced Heart Failure including cardiac
transplantation (SNAHFS), Adult Congenital Cardiac Disease (SACCS) and Pulmonary Vascular Disease
(SPVU).
The Cardiology Unit has 4 modern cardiac catheterisation labs (including EP) and a device theatre. There
is a 16 bay day unit attached to the cardiac catheterisation suite, an 8-bed coronary care unit and an 8-bed
cardiology ward on Level 2. Additional beds, including those assigned to the National Services are situated
on Level 3. There is full range of non-invasive facilities including echo, TOE, Cardiac-MRI and CT
scanning.
Our team of cardiothoracic surgeons undertake a wide range of cardiothoracic surgical procedures including approximately 1400 open heart procedures together with some 1500 thoracic procedures each year. The unit undertakes heart transplantation and short and long term VAD implants as part of the Scottish National Advanced Heart Failure service and is the Scottish Centre for adult congenital surgery.
In the Heart and Lung Centre there are 4 dedicated cardiac theatres and 2 dedicated thoracic theatres. There are two intensive care units with a total of 21 funded beds, 24 high dependency beds in two separate units and 69 ward beds. The wards consist of single rooms with en-suite facilities and telemetry for the cardiac areas. The operating theatres and critical care areas are co-located, lying adjacent on the same floor. The National Services ward has a dedicated screening room for right heart catheterisation and endomyocardial biopsies.
5. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The main responsibilities of the post are mainly, but not exclusively:
·  Organisation and administration of up to 20 medical students attending GJNH on a monthly basis
·  Delivery of certain key lectures
·  Participation in bed-side teaching
·  Assessment of performance at the end of placement
·  Liaison with the Medical Education team and Undergraduate medical school
·  Participate in post graduate education activities
6.  SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT
Familiarity with hospital IT systems including SCI Store, PACS, Medcon, CaTHi system and the Clinical Information System.
Ability to make presentations at departmental meetings – Microsoft PowerPoint.
7.  DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
Although the post holder is likely to be in a position to exercise autonomy, service and education are Consultant led activities and their will be Consultant availability and appropriate supervision at all times.
8. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS
The post holder will have to communicate with both junior and senior medical colleagues, with ward and intensive care nurses and with Nurse Practitioners in addition to other AHPs. The continuing responsibilities for medical education will also involve close links with the Beardmore Centre for Health Science.
There will be opportunities to make presentations and to be involved in postgraduate teaching. The unit has a strong tradition in audit and projects are actively encouraged.
9. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
It is anticipated that the post will be essentially office hours Monday to Friday with no weekend commitment. There is no requirement for out-of-hours working.
10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB
Providing medical students with appropriate learning experiences and giving effective feedback and assessment at the end of block.
11. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB
All applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council.
Applicants should hold the MRCS, MRCP or equivalent. Ideally they should have experience in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, or Critical Care.
Applicants for the posts should have completed second year Foundation competencies.
The centre runs regular teaching activities each week and training will be given as required. There is a permanent wet lab facility which the trainees are encouraged to use for self-directed training.
Courses are available locally and study leave will be as laid down in the terms and conditions of service.
The post holder will be required to adhere to all GJNH policies, procedures and regulations.
12. Terms and Conditions of Service
This post is covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital and Dental Staff (Scotland).
Salary Scale: As per national rates (SHO or SpR national pay scales).
One weeks paid study leave per annum.
