Name: Jihoon Lee
Affiliation: RedmondHigh School (student)
I am Jihoon Lee, a student in the 11th grade at RedmondHigh School.
Since an early age I have been engrossed in finding out how things work. One favorite incident that my mom likes to recall happened when I was four years old: I was at a park, looking at an unknown older kid’s bicycle. The owner of the bicycle returned from his little trip elsewhere, and hit me on the head, suspecting that I was up to no good staring at his bicycle’s sprockets and chains. Despite the hit, I continued to stare in wonder at the contraptions and it was entirely of my own accord, uninfluenced by the owner’s attack, when I decided to finish looking and move out. I also remember the first book that I had actually wanted to get: it was titled “How Machines Work.” I still have that first book today in clean, though well-read, condition.
My inclination for scientific discoveries has not changed and has in fact manifested itself further. As I entered high school, I actively sought out scientific or mathematic activities to the best of my abilities. As such, Science Olympiad has been a major activity for me since the beginning of high school; from the very beginning of 9th grade when I lived in New Jersey, I was an active participant in the school’s science club, which included Science Olympiad. Upon moving to Redmond in the first quarter of 10th grade, I immediately sought out, found, and joined the Science Olympiad club here, seeking to continue my efforts in the area. Since the beginning, I have been closely involved in its leadership.
Some time ago, I learned about the creation of a student advisor to the Washington Science Olympiad Board of Directors. Although it is only on a trial basis, such a position is of great interest to me. An expansion of my leadership concerns to this level would better link my region to the advisory board, for one reason. Most importantly, however, it would allow a more direct liaison between the state board and the student body. If chosen to be student advisor, I will be fully able to represent the student body in this regard and undertake any other student Science Olympiad operations. I will make sure to perform to the best of my abilities, as I always have concerning Science Olympiad leadership.
Thank you for granting me the opportunity for nomination as student advisor to the Board of Directors.
Sincerely,
Jihoon Lee
