REFLECTION A New Commandment
In today's Gospel Jesus gives the disciples a new commandment - to love one another. When we truly love one another, we are experiencing something of the divine as love comes from God, love is God and God is love. Surely Jesus' command to love one another was nothing new for the disciples and those of their time; the commandment is well known in the Old Testament. But the love Jesus asks of the disciples here (and of us) is to love as he has loved, and that is a controversial love for some. It is controversial because Jesus' love is without restrictions and without exclusion. It is a love of those we may not like, a love of those it is hard to love. This love was too radical for some of the religious leaders of Jesus' time and ultimately led to his death. This radically inclusive love is sometimes too much for Christians today also, to love the sinner, to love those on the extreme margins of our society, to love those who have hurt us, to welcome back those who have done wrong, to include all at the table. Let us hear those words of the Gospel more clearly today: 'love one another, just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. 'We can dream and work towards a world where this is a reality.
Let the Church always be a place of mercy and hope, where everyone is welcome, loved and forgiven.
Reflect on today’s Gospel…..
Right through his final meal, Jesus has been revealing the
depth of his love for his disciples. Judas’s heart, however,
is coarsened by greed: he moves from light into
shadow-land, into the night. Hate replaces love, and
betrayal replaces committed friendship.
Lord, like Judas, I can turn from you, lured by my own
autonomous ways. In this place of prayer let me recline
on your heart, as the beloved disciple did. May I thus be
attuned to the very heartbeat of God and grow steadily in
living in a loving mode.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
John 13:31-35
1. Judas leaves and Jesus announces that the moment has come for God's power to be made manifest. This is unexpected at a moment of imminent betrayal. Have there been times for you when the power of God was made manifest in strange circumstances?
2. 'I shall not be with you much longer.' Jesus announces a parting of the ways. There are places we have to go in life where others cannot come with us. There are places others have to go and we cannot accompany them. When have you experienced this going on alone as necessary for a fuller life for yourself, or for someone else?
3. Jesus proclaims love as the distinguishing characteristic of his followers. Have there been times when reaching out to others has heightened your sense of walking in the footsteps of Jesus?
4. Who are the individuals or communities whose love for one another and for others has been a witness to you?
LECTIO MUSINGS
Judas. What a tragic name. What a terrible legacy to leave behind. Yet Christ loved him and called him as one of the twelve. What motivated his betrayal? We will never know. We pray that in his despair the Father leant in mercy and restored him to the fullness of his love. There is aspects of Judas in us all. Christ has overcome sin and death and is now glorified and what is more he has promised a share in this glory to all who believe and follow him. How do I follow him? By living out a life of loving service. By daily being a washer of feet. By this love you have for one another everyone will know that you are my disciple.
Lord help me to love you in others each day. Help me to touch your face with mercy and kindness. Help me to overcome the barriers of ego and dislike and know that even those I find hard to love are a manifestation of your gloried Body in my world each day
LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS WITH KATH AND QUMEN
The Liturgy of the Eucharist – We bring our gifts: During this part of the Mass we move from the ambo to the altar. We have heard the Word of God and now we come to share in the Bread of Life at the altar. The first part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist is about preparing the gifts that we bring to the altar. The most important gifts that we bring are the bread and wine. The bread is placed on something which looks like a plate. We call this a paten. The wine is in a glass jug. These gifts are placed on the altar. One of the first gifts that you will notice being prepared is the gift of money. You will see people moving through the church with a basket or a bag for the collection. Everyone is asked to put some money into the basket or bag. This money helps to pay for all the things that are done in the parish, including helping those who may not have enough for themselves.
