Kennedy Junior High strives to provide an atmosphere where faculty, staff, and parents all work together to provide the best learning environment for our children. Whatever level of involvement you desire, there’s a space for you. There are many activities throughout the school year that need adult volunteers. For example, fundraising activities, team events, book fairs, community assistance – the opportunities are vast! We invite you to become involved in your child’s education and make a difference in their lives.

If you are interested in signing up for any volunteer opportunities, please use the website listed below. Listed below are descriptions of each committee to give you a better understanding of the depth and extent of each committee’s volunteer needs. Choose the opportunity that fits into your schedule and extent of involvement that interests you.

Kennedy Volunteer Opportunity Descriptions

Book Fair – A Fall and Spring Book Fair is held each year that coincides with parent/ teacher conferences. Volunteers are needed to Chair the program, serve as Volunteer Coordinator, help with set-up, and work during the fair. Consider working a 2-hour shift at your convenience or donate a snack. Contact Mrs. Romeroat or 630-420-3233 for further information.

Door Greeter / Front Office Volunteer – Have fun, meet new people and be a great help to the office staff. As a door greeter you will spend about 2-1/2 hours a shift welcoming students and guests, helping guests with directions, writing passes for students, etc. You pick the day(s) of the week and the shift(s) that works best for you. There are three shifts of greeters per day (7:30 to 10:00 am, 10:00 to 12:30 pm and 12:30 to 2:50 pm). The first day of school is a busy one and we can always use extra help that morning. We also welcome those that are interested in working on miscellaneous office projects throughout the year with the front office staff. Family Connections – This is a volunteer group of Kennedy families that work together to lend a helping hand to Kennedy families experiencing difficult times. You will be contacted via email on an as needed basis. Family Connections donates gift card towards a Thanksgiving/Holiday meal for KJHS families in need, supplies healthy snacks to the Nurse’s Office, and works with the Kennedy Charity Caterers by assisting with cooking projects. Family and Consumer Science – The FACS department needs volunteers for yearly, trimester and daily activities. They are looking for general departmental helpers with various projects throughout the year as well with sewing assistance for the 7th & 8th grade projects and embroidery projects (training available). If food is your forte, consider helping with a weekly Kennedy Charity Caters meeting where you assist the student’s afterschool to cook up creations to raise funds for local charities. Assistance is also needed at the popular 8th graderFACS luncheon where they prepare and serve their team teachers. Contact Mrs. Janis at or 630-848-5478 with questions.

Hospitality – Do you like to bake? Or do you just want to help at your child’s school? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Hospitality Committee needs volunteers like you to provide these items. For more information contact Jing Kong at or 630-548-9889.

LRC – Volunteers are needed in our LRC for a wide variety of jobs including volunteering on a weekly basis for a 2-hour shift and helping to set up and work at the Blue Iguana Poetry Night in April. If you are interested, please sign up and you will be invited to our beginning of the school year breakfast! For questions please contact LRC Director, Mrs. Romeroat or 630-420-3233.

Magazine Drive –This is Kennedy's only fundraiser and itsupports numerous student activities including field trips and student clubs, as well as the purchase of classroom items and LRC books. To accomplish this enormous undertaking, we need volunteers to verify and process magazine orders brought in by students. The morning shift is from 8:30 to 11:30 am and the afternoon shift is from 11:30 to 2:30 pm. You can choose the day and time you'd like to work. Help is also needed with tracking of the classroom goalsandstudent incentive activities during student lunch periods.Contact Nicole Rorke at or 630-207-7657 if you have any questions.

Moving On -This committee plans and executes the Moving on Ceremony for the 8th graders on the last day of school. We need lots of creative minds who can design, photograph, and decorate. The co-chairs are looking for those interested in chairing the following sub-committees: Decorations, 7th grade parent volunteers, Invitations, Class Video, Program, and Class Gift. All sub-chairs work in conjunction with the Moving On Committee and the 8th grade students. Contact Maria Dennis at r 630-697-4728.

Miscellaneous Home & School Projects – Help is needed for small H&S projects that come up throughout the year. Examples of these projects include helping a high school counselor register 8th graders for Central or North, assisting with distribution of cake at the end of the year celebration or collating registration packets over the summer. You will be emailed the opportunities and then you can decide if it is something that you are interested in or if it fits into your schedule. School Family Community Partnership – It has been shown that family and community involvement play an important role in your child’s education and SFCP is a partnership that strives to accomplish this. SFCP works on various projects throughout the year bridging family, community and curriculum including the Technology Walk during curriculum night, Coffee with the Principal, New Student Family Tours, and the Character Counts program. We meet once every other month so please consider being a part of Kennedy’s award winning team. Please contact Dee Dauber at or630-548-9002.

Supply Packs – H&S coordinates supply pack, locker shelves, flash drive order processing and distribution for the convenience of parents. Help is needed to distribute the supply packs to 6th graders after their orientation on the evening of August 13 and at 7th and 8th grade schedule pick-up the morning of August 14. We welcome volunteers on either day for a 1 or 2 hour shift - whatever fits your schedule. Spirit Wear – Spirit Wear is sold by H&S to help promote school spirit.Volunteers are needed during 6th grade registrationon the evening of August 13 and at 7th/8th grade schedule pick-up on the morning of August 14to distribute P.E. Shirts, display Spirit Wear and take orders. Volunteers are also needed during Curriculum Night on September 11 to display Spirit Wear and take orders. Vision and Hearing Screenings – Volunteers are needed to assist our health technicians and school nurse during our annual vision and hearing screenings. Two shifts of six volunteers are needed on the initial screening day (9/30) and three volunteers for one morning shift on the re-screening day (10/14).
