Periodic Table Notes – Use your online textbook, Unit 02, Chapter 5, starting on p. 145 (actual text) or p. 106 (the online textbook page) to answer the following questions. You can work in pairs if you wish with just the person sitting next you from your group. You are not working in your usual groups of four. You may work in a group of 3 only if your partner is absent or you are part of a group of 5 normally. Do not bug your substitute teacher. Use your text well and really read as needed as opposed to just skimming for answers.

1)  Who is the person credited with publishing the first periodic table?

2)  How many periods are there on the periodic table?

2b) As elements go from left to right across a period, do they become less or more metallic?

3)  A is a vertical column of elements in the periodic table.

4)  Which elements are more likely to share chemical properties – two elements in the same group or two elements in the same period?

5)  How are groups related to valence electrons?

6)  Describe the following in as much detail as possible. Do not just copy the one official definition given in the text. Use the given chart on page 155 (text page) given to describe multiple properties of each.

Metals:

Nonmetals:

Metalloids (a.k.a semimetals):

6b) Explain where the metals, nonmetals, and metalloids are on the periodic table.

6c) Give the symbols for all of the metalloids.

6d) Are there more metals or nonmetals on the periodic table?

6e) Give the symbols of all the elements that are nonmetals that are NOT part of the halogen or noble gas families.

7)  Fill out the table below.

Family / # of Valence e’s / Members by Symbol / Other Important Information/Characteristics of Elements in this Group
Alkali Metals
Alkaline Earth Metals
Halogens
Noble Gases

8)  Which groups (by name) make up the s-block?

9)  Which groups (by column number) make up the p-block?

9b) Which of the two groups (by name) from the table above can be found in the p-block?

10) Which groups (by column number) make up the d block?

11) What’s another name you can use to refer to all of the d and f block of elements?

12) Explain why He belongs in column 18 with the rest of the noble gases even though it only has 2 valence electrons.

13) Is H a metal or a nonmetal? Why is it placed above the alkali metals on the left instead of on the right of the table with the rest of the nonmetals?

Go to page 172-173 (Standardized test prep in Chapter 5). Answer all questions 1-15 (skip #12). List your answers here or on the back of this sheet (just the letter is fine for the multiple choice) for the given questions. Please bring this to class for Tuesday 12/22. It does not have to be completed, but it will be due for homework for after the break so do a good job!
