11th Annual SCMEA Day of Horn

Dear Colleagues:

We proudly present our guest artists for the 11th SCMEA Day of Horn:

Julie Landsman, former principal horn of the Metropolitan Opera, Professor of Horn at Julliard and principal horn of the world renowned chamber orchestra Orpheus.

Eric Davis, principal horn of the Broadway show GiGi, well known New York City freelance player and professor of horn at Hofstra University

Linda Kimball, principal horn of the Madison Symphony, professor of horn at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Our Day of Horn will present performances by our large ensembles which include the Northport Horn Club, Suffolk Horn Club and the Day of Horn Student All Star Ensemble. The Day of Horn finale is a performance by the Day of Horn Massed Horn Ensemble. All participants will sign in to set the Guinness World Record, Largest French Horn Ensemble.

Schedule of Events:

3:30-4:00: Check-in and registration

4:00-5:00: Rehearsals and clinics

5:15-6:00: Massed Horn Ensemble Dress Rehearsal

6:00-7:15: Dinner - All chaperones must supervise students in the cafeteria

6:00-6:45: Ensemble Rehearsals in the auditorium

7:30-8:45: Concert – Free to public

No food/drink allowed in the auditorium. Eating in cafeteria only.

*Special instructions for participating in the Guinness World Record attempt: All participants must understand that video and still photos will be given to Guinness and become the property of Guinness in order to corroborate our record attempt.

A: Registration instructions for SCMEA Members:

1. Log onto www.scmeafest.org. If you haven’t registered yet click the register icon.

2. Once you have logged on, click on the Days of Festivals icon in the top tool bar.

3. Pull down Day of Horn – 2016

4. Input student data. Recommend level 6 players for the Student All Star Ensemble.

(Send NYSSMA forms to Alan Orloff for recommended All Star Ensemble students.)

5. Click the Nominate Student Tab

6. Registration fee is $15.00. Please remit all PO’s and checks to:

B. Registration instructions for non SCMEA members:

Please go to the Day of Horn Webpage, www.scmea.org/hornday. Scroll down to the Registration Information section. There you will find a special link for you to click so that you can register easily. This link is useful for all teachers, students, professional and amateur hornists and parents who are not Suffolk County Music Educator’s Assn. members. You DO NOT have to be a SCMEA member to participate in the Day of Horn or the Guinness World Record attempt to be the Word’s Largest French Horn Ensemble.

Massed Horn Ensembles part assignments are by grade as follows:

Horn 1: 11th and 12th grade students

Horn 2: 9th and 10th grade students

Horn 3: 7th and 8th grade students

Horn 4: 6th grades students and advanced 5th grade students

Horn 5: 4th and 5th grade students, beginner level

Student All-Star Ensemble: Level 6 rating required. Parts distributed by assignment only with teacher recommendation. Read all download instructions carefully.

Day of Horn music is now available. A download link for festival music will be provided to all registrants once registration is completed.

Information about purchasing food, t-shirts and horn related items from our vendors are found in the Student Information Letter in the Information letters section of the Day of Horn web page.

All information and music should be downloaded and printed prior to Day of Horn!

There will be no “deadline” for Day of Horn registration.

The SCMEAfest registration portal will remain open through the event date.

No one will be denied access to this special event!

Horn Day Reminders for Participants:

1. All participants must check in between 3:30-4:00 pm at the Registration Desk even if you pre-registered through school, by mail or at www.scmefest.org. Buses should not arrive before 3:15 pm to avoid the Northport High School dismissal.

2. After check in you will be directed to your Part Rehearsal Room. You can leave your cases and coats in these rooms.

3. The first session begins at 4:00 pm in your Part Rehearsal Room. Northport schools will provide chairs! YOU MUST bring a your own stand, your downloaded music, instrument, pencils and anything else you need for your performance.

4. Snacks and drinks will be sold during the event. Students may bring their own food. There will be a dinner break and pizza will be available at $3.00 per slice. Pizza must be ordered at sign-in so the proper amount can be delivered. There will be a pizza order desk next to the registration table.

5. Dress neatly and casually, appropriate for the occasion and the concert.

6. As guests in the school building, we ask that you conduct yourselves accordingly.

7.  SCMEA Day of Horn T shirts and CD’s will be available for purchase. New designs T-shirts are $15.00. Also, this year’s concert will be recorded. You can order concert CD’s using the order form on the web page or at the Day of Horn Recording table in the lobby on Horn Day. The CD’s are $20.00 including shipping.

8.  This year we will have a 50/50 Raffle as a fundraiser. Tickets are $5.00.

9. Please stay for the entire event and encourage your parents, friends and family to come to the evening concert. The concert is free and begins at 7:30 pm. As one of the performers, I find it much more rewarding to play for a large, appreciative audience. I’m sure our guest artists feel the same way! With hundreds of horn players in the massed horn ensemble and some of the world’s greatest hornists playing recital selections, you can guarantee anyone wanting to attend a most memorable evening. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you!!
