Course Description and Rationale:

An instrumental ensemble selected by audition with programming including concert, jazz, and worship literature. The wind ensemble plays at several concerts during the year. The Wind Ensemble provides students the opportunity to use their instrumental backgrounds in various ministry and concert settings. Students may take Winds of Praise for credit. Prerequisite: previous band experience.

Course Objectives:

The student who satisfactorily completes this course should be able to:

1. Discipline himself/herself to the routine of healthy rehearsal techniques and the demands of music preparation.

2. Show sensitivity to ensemble playing in the use of dynamics, phrasing, tempos, attacks, releases, and articulation.

3. Blend with other players in the same sections while giving attention to the balance of the entire ensemble.

4. Understand ways that a wind ensemble can be used to contribute to a church music program in a local congregation.

Course Policies and Procedures:

1. EACH MEMBER IS EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BAND BOTH SEMESTERS.

2. Attendance at every rehearsal is essential. Absences will reduce the final grade. Sectional rehearsals may be called if the need arises.

3. SET UP SHOULD BE COMPLETED BEFORE the start of rehearsal. Each player will be responsible for arriving a few minutes early to set up his/her music, music stand, and instrument.

  1. It is understood that when the band and choirs perform together, those band members in both band and choir will normally play in the band.

5. The instrumental storage room must be kept neat AT ALL TIMES. Label your instrument and put equipment away on the shelves.

6. Music must be stored in the designated areas only. Any music that is lost will be charged to the student's account.

7. You will be dropped from class with a failing grade according to the school policy on absences (4 hours of absences max). MONDAY NIGHTS COUNT AS TWO REHEARSAL HOURS. Three tardies will count as one absence.

8. All performances are mandatory. Absence from a performance may result in dismissal from the band with a failing grade.

9. If a school activity will cause you to be absent, please notify your director at least one week in advance. Always notify the director if you must miss due to illness.

10. Outfits: First time Winds of Praise members must pay for a portion of their outfits. For the women, the cost is approximately $75 and the cost for hemming is your responsibility. For the men the cost is about $150 (the men pay for half of the tuxedo, shirt, bow, tie vest and alterations). You must be in Winds of Praise for both semesters. If you drop after the semester, you will be required to pay for the remaining expense of your outfit. Both men and women are required to wear black dress shoes with their outfits (the women’s must be closed- toe heels). Men are to wear black socks with their tux.

Note: Non-credit participants are expected to pay the full cost of the outfit if needed.

  1. Rehearsal procedures. Set up BEFORE rehearsal time. The following are not permitted in rehearsal: wearing caps, shorts, sweats, or immodest clothing; food or gum; causing disruption of the rehearsal. The following are encouraged: enthusiasm, attentiveness, good posture and great playing!
  2. Up to one performance per month may be added to the schedule below. Scheduling will be by mutual agreement with the band at least three weeks in advance.

Grading factors:

  1. Musical contribution and Rehearsal Participation
  2. Ability to play your part
  3. Attendance and Punctuality
  4. Attentiveness in rehearsals and performances

Performance Schedules may change during the semester. Clarification of changes will be made in rehearsals:

CLASS ATTENDANCE

Since much of the education process occurs in the interactions of students and faculty with the curriculum, student attendance at class is required. Students with more than two weeks of absences in a particular course will receive the grade of FA (Failure due to absences) in the class. Students who reach this level prior to seventh week of the semester may withdraw from the class and receive a “W” for the class. In Winds of Praise more than six hours of rehearsals (Monday night counts as 2 hours) missed will result in the grade FA.

Students should keep documentation on absences (Dr.’s note or bill, note to professor about school sponsored activity, personal records, etc.). Reinstatements will not be considered without proper reporting and documentation.
