Mss Eur D963: East India Company papers, 1757.

Volume of information on trade with India, the Persian Gulf, Arabia and the East Indies, including tables of coins, assays, weights, measures and customs duties with a list of East India Company tonnage.

Fascinating volume, comprehensive merchant guide really. Contains, amongst other things, loads of decimal tables that I don’t really understand: ‘Table of decimals the Integer a Bombay Maund’, same for current Rupees, one with hundred weights, one with Surat Rupee as the Integer, one with Troy Pound as Integer, one with Troy ounce as integer, troy pennyweight as integer, one with Pound Avoirdupois as the integer, one with Pound Sterling as integer, one with BengallMaund as integer.

Tables comparing Mocha Dollars and Spanish Dollars (60 Mocha Dollars = about 50 Spanish Dollars), tables for converting Spanish Dollars into Bombay Rupees.

Account of the value of gold and silver at Bombay [100 ounces of lots of different kinds of pieces of silver between 230 and 260 Rupees, apart from a couple of exceptions]. Similar tables for Madras and Bengal. Account of what different kinds of coins yield in the Madras mint (p.31).

List of Bombay weights and Measures, list of Madras weights and measures, list of Bengal weights and measures. Account of weights, measures, customs, general commercial info. and coins at Bussorah (pp. 34-35). Same at Juddah, Muscat, Mocha, Gombroon, Batavia, Callicut, Tellicherry, Anjengo, Cochin, Goa, Carwar, Scindy, Surat, Acheen and Patta (pp. 36-53). Same also for China towards the back of the volume.

List of the ‘East India Company’s Tonnage’ [everything that they trade in and an amount]. Useful for freight piece?

Some useful info is provided in these:

28 pounds to the Maund (Bombay)

80 Cash is 1 Fanam, 36 Fanams is 1 Pagoda.

10 India ‘Matts’ or 100 China ‘Touch’ is 24 Carats (Gold Standard).

Random little pages throughout like ‘The Computed Numbers of Innhabitants’ in various cities (London 725,903, Amsterdam 217,313 apparently), and a method for calculating the ‘age’ of the Moon.

An account of customs payable by the Proprietors on Goods brought from the East Indies to London (pp. 58-59) – this is extensive, could transcribe if would be useful?

Some information on customs on various goods:

And laid on them an Additional Duty of Six Per Cent Payable by the Europeans and continued till about 12 Years ago when the Foyen who was then the Hoppo Added another Duty of 10 P Cent and kept it for his Own Use, but dying in 2 Years he was succeeded by the Totumstock who paid Both the Additional Duties to the Emperor.

NB – China weights: 10 Chandereen = 1 Mace, 10 Mace = 1 Tale = 16 Tale = 1 Catty, A Pecul is 100 Catty. 1 Pecul – 132 lbs 11 ounces Avoirdupois, or 161 lbs, 5 ozs Troy.

China coins: 10 Cash are 1 Canderin [3 farthings], 10 Canderins = 1 Mace, 10 Mace = 1 Tael. So acocunts are in Tael, Mace and Canderins usually.

Confusing slightly as Tael and Mace both coins and weights.
