MSRC: Proposed Plan of Study

Overview: The Masters of Science in Respiratory Care curriculum is developed to produce leaders and consultants in Respiratory Care. The on-line Masters of Science In Respiratory Care (MSRC) is a 40 credit plan of study over 2 or 3 years that would prepare a baccalaureate level working Respiratory Therapists with the knowledge and competencies necessary to become experts in Respiratory Care leadership, education, research and to achieve advanced clinical credentials. Graduates of the on-line MSRC will fill the need for educators, researchers, leaders and advanced clinical practitioners.

Course Descriptions:

RESP 6115 Research Methods for Respiratory Care (3)

Co-requisite: RESP 6101. Methods of inquiry for research are explored and critiqued within the field of Respiratory Care. Emphasis is on developing skills useful for conducting and evaluating basic, applied, and clinical research.Students will review selection of appropriate basic statistics and analysis of data, and they will develop a plan for their Capstone project including search methodology for their systematic review.

RESP 6101 Respiratory Care Leadership (3)

Prerequisite: Admittance into MSRC program. This course will provide an in-depth knowledge of foundations and practice of leadership. This course will also introduce concepts related to leading people and managing resources into the future. This course will also provide an overview of current and projected trends in Respiratory Therapy. The course will also focus on the future roles for Respiratory Therapists in education, management, research, and leadership.

RESP 6102 Pulmonary Disease Management (3)

Prerequisite or Co-requisite: RESP 6101. This course is a case based exploration of pulmonary disease management that presents the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of common respiratory diseases that Respiratory Therapists will encounter in clinical practice. Didactic content is presented online and students will lead synchronous discussion of cases on-line and manage related discussion forums on topics related to specific disease entities. The course is organized in 4 modules that address respiratory insufficiency, airway diseases, inflammatory lung disease, and a final module on neuromuscular disease, lung cancer and postoperative pulmonary complications.

RESP 6103 Cardiovascular Disease Management (3)

Prerequisite: RESP 6101. This course is a case based exploration of cardiovascular disease management that presents the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of common cardiovascular diseases that Respiratory Therapists will encounter in clinical practice. Didactic content is presented online and students will lead synchronous discussion of cases on-line and manage related discussion forums on topics related to specific disease entities. The course is organized in 4 modules that address cardiac insufficiency, structural diseases, vascular disease, and a final module on sleep disordered breathing, trauma, dysrhythmias and end of life care.

RESP 6104 Health Policy, Law & Ethics in Respiratory Care (3)

Prerequisite: RESP 6101 and RESP 5101. The student will gain an overview of health policy, law, and ethics as it relates to respiratory care practice. Students will also discuss essential issues related to health policy and law. Students will gain a basic knowledge of structuring and writing health policy analysis. The students will be introduced to government and organizational ethics issues and the laws that govern these processes. Students will be introduced to topics related to patient consent and patient rights and responsibilities as they relate to health policy and law.

RESP 6105 Pulmonary Function Testing & Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation (3)

Prerequisite: RESP 6101. This course includes an introduction to open and closed systems of pulmonary function testing including the theory and operations of the body plethysmograph. The management and quality control of the pulmonary function lab will also be discussed. The course also includes selected theories and practices in pulmonary rehabilitation and the planning of the components of an effective comprehensive multi-disciplinary pulmonary rehabilitation program. Topics and emphasis may vary.

RESP 6106 Mechanical Ventilation Application & Monitoring (3)

Prerequisite: RESP 6101, RESP 6102, RESP 6103, RESP 6105. This course will provide an in-depth knowledge of advanced theory, set-up, operation, and maintenance of mechanical ventilators and related equipment. This course will provide instruction on all phases of continuous mechanical ventilation. The history of mechanical ventilation, modes of mechanical ventilator support, implementation, monitoring, ventilator weaning and discontinuation will be covered. Cutting-edge ventilator modes, noninvasive ventilators and high frequency oscillators will also be discussed. The integration of advanced techniques for invasive and noninvasive patient monitoring will be reviewed. Topics and emphasis may vary.

RESP 5101. Health Outcomes and Quality Assessment. (3) Prerequisite: RESP 6101. The student will develop an understanding of the US healthcare system and healthcare organizational structure. The students will gain a deep knowledge of evidence-based methods and techniques to design, implement, and evaluate healthcare quality control/improvement initiatives. The students will be introduced to the concepts of Lean and Six Sigma methodology. The students will also develop an understanding of patient and population education programs and the process of developing these programs. The student will gain knowledge related to quality measurement and performance. The student will also be able to identify quality performance gaps and how to close these gaps.

RESP 5102. Department Management in the Healthcare Environment. (3)

Prerequisite: RESP 6101 and RESP 5101. The student will develop an understanding of the administrative and financial aspects of healthcare management. The student will be introduced to concepts related to strategic planning and healthcare marketing. The student will learn about financing health care and health insurance. The student will be introduced to concepts related to managing costs and revenues associated with department management. The student will also learn about human resources, legal, and policy concepts related to outpatient, inpatient, public, and private sectors.

RESP 6601 Emerging Issues in Respiratory Care Seminar (3)

Prerequisite: RESP 6101 and RESP 6115. In this seminar course students will research an emerging issue of interest in pulmonary disease management and present this material to faculty and other students and lead discussions online and in discussion forums, which the student develops and maintains. Didactic content of the course will address elements in the conduct of evidence-based research. The students will be asked to develop issues for discussion related to their Capstone projects, as well as issues in the healthcare news that semester.

RESP 6801 Advanced Credential Exam Preparation Course (2)

(Credit by exam for ACCS, NPS, RPFT)

Prerequisite: RESP 6101, RESP 6102, RESP 6103 & RESP 6105. This course is designed to guide the MSRT student in preparation for an NBRC specialty exam of interest. The student will receive credit for the course once they have successfully completed the specialty exam. Credit by exam will be given to students who have already successfully completed an advanced credentialing exam offered by the National Board of Respiratory Care. These may include the ACCS, NPS, or RPFT credentialing exam. Topics and emphasis may vary.

RESP 6802 Respiratory Care Capstone (3)

Prerequisite: RESP 6101, RESP 6115, RESP 6106 and RESP 6601. The student will develop a project in their clinical environment, community or educational environment that impacts positive change. The focus will be in quality improvement, management, education, research or advanced clinical practice at the discretion of the student under faculty guidance. Elements include interviews, data management, and literature review that culminate in a systematic review, poster, oral presentation, and a comprehensive paper documenting the project.
