MS Word Basics

Exercise 1: Quick overview of Word’s Menu & Tool bars

  • Practice clicking on each Word menu item (such as “File,” “Edit,”“View,” etc.) opening and closing it

Exercise 2: Creating and saving a new document

  • Open a new document, type the title “Practice” at the top.Then, save the document (save it to the Floppy in the A Drive), giving it the name “Word Practice”

Exercise 3: Formatting your Document

  • On the new document that you have created, under the title (Practice), type the text “Putnam County Department of Health” onto document, make this heading bold, font size 14, font style Verdana, and center it on the page

Exercise 4: Creating Numbered or Bulleted outlines

  • On your document, replicate the 2 outlines below (the numbered outline and the bulleted outline)

Exercise 5: Creating a Table

  • Create the table below in 2 steps, follow the instructions for each step.

Step1: Create the table as it is below, typing in the names. Then, sort by last namefollowed by first name (so that it looks like the list of names in Step 2)

Step 2: Add a row at the bottom of the table, type in the label “Total Visits” then, using the Formula feature (located on the “Table” drop-down menu), sum the total number of visits here.

Exercise 6: Using Drawings in your document

  • Using “AutoShapes” from the “Drawing” tool bar, draw an arrow, color it, and add text to the arrow.

Exercise 7: Copying pictures & text from other sources (Internet, etc.)

  • Copy the PutnamCounty logo below from the PutnamCounty web site, resize and crop picture, change its text warping attributes to “In Front of Text” so that you can move the logo around the page at will and place it in front of any text on the page.
  • Copy text below which will be found on the same web page as the PutnamCountylogo, format the font copied text to Verdana style, size 10, it should look similar to the text below.

  • As part of your handouts you have been give a Lyme Disease Fact Sheet. Using MS Word, and the skills you have leaned, replicate this document. The exact text and the images are located on a web page titled “Lyme Disease Information” which we will show you how to locate. Have fun and we are here to help you with any step of this.
