HEALTH ADVICE

1.  TRAVELLERS DIARRHOEA AND SICKNESS

India is one of the top five countries in the world where travellers develop diarrhoea and sickness. It is due to the ingestion of contaminated food or water. They are mainly bacterial (eg. Salmonella and Campylocobacter). This can be avoided if you are strict with food and drinking:

i.  NEVER drink tap water, only use bottled water. Always brush your teeth with bottled water and wash your hands regularly.

ii.  AVOID high risk foods such as salads, shellfish, undercooked meats and dairy products. One effective scheme is to become a vegetarian. Do NOT eat street food.

2.  VACCINATIONS

You must be up to date with all your standard vaccinations:

i.  Diphtheria

ii.  Tetanus

iii.  Polio – very important

iv.  Hepatitis A

v.  Typhoid Fever

3.  MALARIA

When we visit Jaipur in January, malaria is not so much of a problem, so medication is not recommended. However, you should still try to avoid insect bites and use insect repellent, and cover your arms and legs at night. The malaria mosquito is nocturnal, coming out between dusk and dawn. This is particularly true if you travel on to warmer or desert areas in India before or after the workshops’ week.
