Ms. Conrad’s Family DC Tourist Trip

Ms. Conrad’s family is visiting DC for the first time during this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival. They are only here for a day and want to see as much as DC as possible. She needs some help deciding where they should go and how much they can see while they are here. Using the map and information provided, plan a day for them.

Important Information for the Conrad Family Visit:

1)Ms. Conrad’s family will be getting off at the Federal Triangle Metro station and will be walking the entire day. They will arrive at 10AM and need to leave by 3PM.

2)You must visit at least 6 tourist destinations (not including the required visit to the White House).

3)One of the tourist destinations must be a museum.

4)You must follow the guidelines for how long to stay at each destination.

Destinations:

REQUIRED: Federal Triangle Metro (start and end point—you must have Ms. Conrad’s family start from here and provide enough time for them to catch the 3PM train.

White House—Ms. Conrad’s family wants to take a picture together in front of the White House. You can’t go to DC and not see the White House. (20 minutes).

Museums:

Air and Space Museum—A world where science and math collides—so exciting! (2 hours)

American History Museum—The first American flag, the First Ladies’ dresses, and a replica of Julia Childs kitchen. (1 ¼ hours)

National Archives—Visit the National Archives and see the Magna Carta, Declaration of Independence, and Constitution. (90 minutes)

Natural History Museum—Taxidermy animals, the Hope Diamond, and live bugs! (1 hour)

Monuments:

Arlington Cemetery—All of Ms. Conrad’s grandparents served in some capacity during WWII. This site has significance to her family.(1 hour)

Capital Building—Without a tour available, Ms. Conrad’s family will only be taking selfies on the the steps. (15 minutes)

Jefferson Memorial—Coming during Cherry Blossom season, the walk to the Jefferson Memorial is scenic with the trees in full bloom. (20 minutes) Hint: you need to walk around the pond, you cannot cut across the pond.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial—A civil rights hero, this one is a must see. (20 minutes)

Lincoln Memorial—The Conrad’s hail from the “Land of Lincoln.” They will want to take pictures and try to climb up on Lincoln’s lap…until they are chased out by the guards. (30 minutes)

Reflecting Pond—A site to pass by on the way to another memorial.(10 minutes)

Washington Monument—Although they want to climb to the top, it is closed and they can only walk around and talk a few selfies for facebook. (15 minutes)

World War II Memorial—Ms. Conrad’s family served in WWII. They will want pictures of New York and New Hampshire to commemorate where each grandparents’ home state. (30 minutes)

Vietnam Veterans Memorial—Ms. Conrad’s dad served in Vietnam. This will be a silent moment to pause and be thankful for those who served. (20minutes)

Requirements for the Project:

1)Record all of the distances to each location in cm. Using proportions, determine the distance in miles. SHOW ALL WORK.

2)Using the unit rate, determine how long it will take for Ms. Conrad’s family to walk to each destination. SHOW ALL WORK.

3)Record the agenda on the provided sheet. (Ex: arrive at metro at 10AM, Arrive at museum at 10:20, stay for an hour, etc.)

4)Draw your route on the map when you have finalized your plan.
