Mrs. Sharp’s Science Class Guidelines – 2016-2017
About the Teacher
I grew up in Bellaire, Texas where I attended Pershing JHS and Lamar HS, in Houston. I received my teaching degree in 1982 from THE UNIVERSITY of ARKANSAS. Woo Pig! I’m a HUGE Razorback fan and love sports. My husband’s name is Steve, and my two children are Sydney (20) and Marshall (17). We live in Friendswood.
This is my 25th year of teaching, my 5th year at Rodeo Palms JHS, and my 13th year of teaching in Alvin ISD. I previously taught 7th and 8th-grade Science at ASSETS Academy (Alvin ISD) for 6 years, and one year of 6th-grade science at Alvin Elementary. I have also taught 7th- and 8th-grade science at Pearland JH-East, PE for five years at Eagle Heights Christian Academy, one year of Biology/Coaching at Santa Fe HS, and two years of Health/Coaching at Santa Fe JHS. Rodeo Palms JHS is a great place to be and has some of the best teachers in the district. I'm so excited to meet all the new 7th-graders and I know that we will have a fantastic year.
Supplies
Bring the followingsupplies to class every day.
* 1 Composition notebook for an Interactive Science Notebook (ISN)
* 1 Folder with brads
* Pencil bag (keep in binder used for all classes)
* Hand-held pencil sharpener (student keep)
* Pencils/eraser (student keep)
*Black or blue pens(student keep)
* Scissors (student keep)
* Small bottle of glue or glue stick or tape (for ISN)
* Markers (student keep)
* Map pencils (student keep)
* 2 boxes of tissues (turn in to teacher)
* Ear buds (student keeps-bring everyday!)
Students will keep up with their own supplies and will not turn them in to the teachers. Supplies should be kept in a pencil bag in binder. One binder for all 7 classes, should be carried to each classes, daily. Students do NOT need a separate binder for each class. Binders should be divided into sections with dividers/tabs – one for each class.The binder should include a steady supply of notebook paper, a pencil bag, and other listed supplies. Homework assignments should be carried back and forth to school, in binder. Please do not send more than 2-3 pens/pencils at a time, as they tend to get lost or disappear.
I will take up the tissues on the first day, for use throughout the year. The composition notebook (ISN) and folder will be for use in the classroom. The composition notebook should be taken home ONLY to study from or finish assignments, as we will be working from the notebook most every day.
BYOD – Bring Your Own Device
Students are allowed to bring their own device for class use, however, phones will be stored away by the teacher during class time if it is not needed for an assignment. Students might be asked to text answers, use a timer, search the internet, or take online quizzes/tests. Please make sure your family’s data plan is communicated. Chromebooks will be available for student use in the classroom as well. Cell phones are not allowed to be out without the teacher’s permission. If students are texting, listening to music without permission, etc., without permission after the tardy bell, devices will be taken up and turned in to the office. The parent will then have to come up to the school and pay the $15 fine to retrieve the device.
Textbook
Textbooks can be checked outto keep at home during the school year with a note from a parent. I keep a class set of books in the classroom. An on-line textbook is available for use at home as well. Students will be given a code to access the online textbook (McGraw-Hill).
District Grading Policy
20% - Classwork/homework
40% - Labs/Quizzes/Progress Checks/Projects
40% - Tests
Homework
Assignments that are not completed in class may become homework.
Guidelines for Make-Up Work
Students are responsible for getting their missed work from absences. Copies of missed assignments and notes are available in the classroom and most assignments can be accessed on the Edmodo website. It is a good idea for students to attend tutorials to complete missed assignments when returning from an absence. Quizzes, tests, and labs will have to be made up before or after school, during tutorials. Students are also encouraged to attend tutorials for extra help when needed, as well as to get organized and fasten papers into ISN.
Tutorials:
Mon - 4:00 – 4:45
Fri – 8:15 – 8:44
Additional tutorials are available upon request.
District Late Work Policy
If students do not turn in an assignment on the day it is due, it will be considered late and students will not be able to earn 100 points on a perfect assignment. Students will receive a late grade as follows:
1 day late = 90
2 days late = 80
3 days late = 70
4+ days late = 0
Expected Behaviors
1. Be in your assigned seat, ready to work,when the bell rings. Sharpen pencil BEFORE the tardy bell rings.
2. Have needed supplies and homeworkassignments every day.
3. Keep hands, feet, books, and objects to yourself. Students are expected to treat the lab and lab
equipment safely and with respect.
4. Profanity, rude gestures, cruel teasing or put downs are not permitted.
5. Be respectful to any adult working atthis school.
Students are required to pass a lab safety quiz and sign a safety contract, before working with lab equipment. If we all follow the golden rule, we will have a fantastic year!
