Fabulous 5th Grade News
Mrs. Huff, Mrs. Lillard & Mrs. Rankins’ October Newsletter
October 2016
Conferences
Conferences are coming up next week, October 12th and 13th. Your child will come home with a confirmation slip this Wednesday. Please return the half indicating if the scheduled time will work for you. Please remember both Wednesday and Thursday next week are early release days at 1:30 and there is no school on Friday, October 14th. We look forward to meeting with you and sharing your child’s progress!
Outdoor School Fundraiser
We are off to a GREAT start with our candy bar sales! If you have money, please bring it ASAP. It is a good idea to bring the money regularly, as this will help us get a more realistic idea about how many bars we have actually sold. The team will make a decision by the end of the week about ordering more boxes. We can’t return any candy to the company, even if it hasn’t been opened, so we need to be conservative on what we think we can sell. If you have more boxes than you can sell, please send them back so that we can reassign to those who are waiting for more. Candy bar sales will conclude on October 24. And finally, THANK YOU for all your support and enthusiasm on the home end in our fundraising efforts!
Auction!
On Monday, October 31st we will have an auction as a celebration and recognition for all the time and effort spent on our fundraiser! Students earn 1 auction dollar for every dollar brought in during the fundraiser. In lieu of a Halloween party, we will have the auction and then go swimming at the pool from 12:45-1:45. Only the students in Mrs. Rankins, Mrs. Lillard, and Mrs. Huff’s classes may wear their costumes to school if they choose. Other students in the school will bring their costumes and dress in the afternoon. However, students need to be able to dress down easily at the pool (no masks, face paint or hair paint please!).
Spelling
As a reminder, your students will record their weekly spelling words in their planner. Each week students have one page front and back, as spelling homework. Spelling practice is part of their nightly homework. We have very little time to practice our spelling words in class during the week so this will mostly be an at home responsibility. Tests are the last day of the school week. The test consists of ten words from the original 20, as well as 5 sentences with two errors that students need to correct. If you haven’t seen a corrected test yet, please ask your child to show you one of theirs.
Field Trip
On November 15th the 4th and 5th grade classes are going to the Hult Center to see the Eugene Symphony’s production of
World Beats Elementary Youth Concert. The cost of this field trip is $2 per student. Please send $2 to school in an envelope with your child’s name on it. Each class will need two parent volunteers for this trip. Please contact your child’s teacher ASAP if you are interested, parents accepted as “first come first served”. We will load the bus at 9:05 and leave by 9:15. The production will start at 10:30 and end at 11:15. We should arrive back at Harrison around 12:15. The students will then eat lunch together. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Read For Fun Expectations
The schoolwide Read for Fun program (formally Read at Home - RAH) has officially started (although 5th grade has already started this year). Students receive a new slip each Monday and it’s due the following Monday. Nightly reading is a homework requirement and will receive a grade on the report card. Not having a slip is not an excuse for not turning it in. You can record minutes on another piece of paper or you can print a slip from any of our class websites online.
