Spring & Classroom Pictures – Date will be announced later in school year.

A student who is tardy to school or leaves early from school, regardless of whether it is excused or not, may disrupt the learning environment for all. For elementary and middle school students, the principal or designee must approve tardies to school or early dismissals from school. Any three unapproved tardies to school or early dismissals from school in a nine-week grading period will count as the student missing a full instructional day. Tardies to school or early dismissals from school may be considered excused for the same reasons as are listed for absences in Section B. The Director of Elementary Schools shall establish and communicate guidelines on the length of time that constitutes a tardy to school or early dismissal from school.

Moment of Silence

The Mecklenburg County School Board recognizes that a moment of silence before each school day prepares students and staff for their respective work or school days. Therefore, each teacher shall observe a moment of silence at the beginning of the first class of each school day.

The teacher responsible for each class shall make sure that each student: (1) remains seated and silent and (2) does not disrupt or distract other students during the moment of silence. The moment may be used for any lawful silent activity, including personal reflection, prayer and meditation. However, the teacher responsible for each class shall not influence, in any way, students to pray or meditate or not to pray or meditate during a moment of silence. Students and employees are prohibited from praying aloud during the moment of silence.

Pledge of Allegiance

Virginia Code § 22.1 – 202 now requires each School Board to require the daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in each classroom of the school division. The School Board shall determine the appropriate time during the school day for the recitation of the Pledge. During the Pledge of Allegiance, students shall stand and recite the Pledge while facing the flag with their right hands over their hearts or in an appropriate salute if in uniform; however, no student shall be compelled to recite the Pledge if he, his parent or legal guardian objects on religious, philosophical or other grounds to his participating in this exercise. Students who are thus exempt from reciting the Pledge shall remain quietly standing or sitting at their desks while others recite the Pledge and shall make no display that disrupts or distracts others who are reciting the Pledge.

The School Board’s Code of Conduct shall apply to disruptive behavior during the recitation of the Pledge in the same manner as provided for other circumstances of such behavior.

MORNING STUDENT DROP-OFF PROCEDURE

The procedure for student drop-off from 8:00 – 8:30 a.m. is intended to reduce congestion and provide security inside and outside the building. An organized and supervised approach to morning student drop-off will insure transfer of responsibility from school to parent without incident.

The following information describes student drop-off procedures. Parent and student cooperation is sincerely appreciated.

·  The student drop-off area is along the front sidewalk at the 1st/2nd grade entrance or the 3rd/4th grade entrance.

·  Parents may park on the left side of the driveway farthest from building (not next to the sidewalk) and walk in with their child.

·  The right side of the driveway will be designated for “drive through” drop-off. Parents should remain in the car and students should exit the car on the right hand (passenger) side next to the sidewalk. Once the student is inside the building the parent pulls off in their vehicle.

·  Kindergarten students should use the 1st/2nd grade entrance as the Kindergarten entrance will be locked.

·  Pre-Kindergarten students should use the 3rd/4th grade entrance and proceed to the cafeteria to meet with their class.

·  Parents are asked to use the front driveways to enter campus and not the large bus parking lot from 7:45 – 8:30 a.m.

·  NO child is to cross the driveway without an adult to escort them.

·  Students who live across the street at Lakewood Apartments must be accompanied by an adult to either of the two front entrances.

·  Students cannot be dropped off at school prior to 8:00 a.m. because there is no adult supervision.

·  Students cannot be dropped off at the main entrance (next to the cafeteria) prior to 8:30 a.m.

·  Students are tardy after 8:30 a.m. If a student arrives after 8:30 a.m. he/she must be accompanied by adult to the office so they may be signed in on the computer and given a tardy note to enter class.

AFTERNOON STUDENT PICK-UP PROCEDURE

The system of student pick-up at the 3:20 dismissal bell is intended to reduce congestion and provide security inside and outside the building. An organized and supervised approach to 3:20 student pick-up will insure transfer of responsibility from school to parent without incident.

The following information describes student pick-up procedures. Parent and student cooperation is sincerely appreciated.

·  The student pick-up area is along the front sidewalk from the first/second grade entrance to the flagpole.

·  Parents are asked to park on the right of the driveway nearest the building and remain with the vehicle.

·  The left side of the driveway will be designated as visitor parking and may be used by parents who come to the office to sign out students early, to get a pass to visit a class or to conduct other business.

·  Duty teachers and car students will exit the first/second grade hall and the third/fourth grade hall at the dismissal bell. Duty teachers will supervise students entering the proper vehicle.

·  The line of waiting vehicles will extend down the hill beyond the teacher parking lot and possibly into the driveway nearest Noblin Farm Road. As vehicles are loaded and leave the sidewalk pick-up area, other vehicles will pull up to the sidewalk where children and duty teachers are waiting. Children will not have to cross any driveway. All vehicles should be able to exit campus before the buses depart.

·  Parents are asked to use the upper driveway to enter campus and not the large bus parking lot from 3:00 – 3:30.

·  PRE-KINDERGARTEN AND KINDERGARTEN PARENTS should enter the lower driveway and drive through the teacher parking lot to the circular pick-up area at the kindergarten playground gate.

Thank you
