Emice J. Dyck

The funeral for Emice J. Dyck, 80, 149 Mt. Barbara, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the FirstUnitedMethodistChurch, the Rev. Paul Mugler officiating. Burial will be in RoselawnMemorial Park.

Mr. Dyck died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 1989, at the Asbury-SalinaRegionalMedicalCenter.

He was born Aug. 14, 1908 at Hillsboro. Mr. Dyck retired in 1971 after teaching 36 years in Kansas schools. He taught in Peabody in 1926, moving to Salina to attend KansasWesleyanUniversity in 1930. In 1935, he was sales manager at Marshall Motor Co.

In 1942, he began teaching at SalinaHigh School and taught ancient history, math and constitution. He was the golf coach for 25 years and his teams won four state championships and 19 league championships. He also served as the Hi-Y sponsor during all of these years.

In 1981, he was inducted into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame. In 1987, he was inducted into the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame.

A member of the FirstUnitedMethodistChurch, he served as church board chairman from 1949 until 1951. He served on the Asbury Hospital Board and as president of the Salina Family YMCA board. He was a past president of the Salina Downtown Lions Club, former district governor, international counselor and Lion of the Year.

He earned the Governor's Youth Award in 1971. Other memberships include the Salina Masonic Lodge No. 60; 32nd Degree Salina Scottish Rite Consistory, Isis Temple Shrine and the Salina Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Verona M. of the home; two daughters, Donna D. Stanford of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and Marvella D. Pauls of Burk, Va.; a brother, G.C. of Lindsborg; a sister, Mrs. Herbert Batt of McPherson; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Kansas Wesleyan or the FirstUnitedMethodistChurch.

Visitation will be at the Ryan Mortuary.

Kansas Wesleyan Hall of Fame adds 2 members

Emice J. Dyck, 149 Mt. Barbara, and Glen Eye, Madison, Wis., were inducted into the Kansas Wesleyan Hall of Fame Tuesday at the school’s annual Founders’ Day banquet.

Dyck, a longtime Salina teacher, is a member of KW’s class of 1933 and has been active in college affairs for many years. He has been president of the Alumni Association, president of the W Clan, a college trustee and holds the Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award and the W Clan Hall of Fame Aware.
