Physical Education 2015-16

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to Mountain Shadows Middle School Physical Education!! Physical education gives students the opportunity to become healthier while demonstrating positive social behaviors that emphasizes both sportsmanship and teamwork all while having fun!The goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activities.

During the school year healthconcepts will be incorporated into PE class time in a classroom setting, as health is avital part of a person's well being and daily life. In order for this to be a positive learning experience, students are expected to follow MSMSclassroom behavior guidelines (found in the student handbook).

Student Expectations

  1. Be Responsible:Students should come to class each day prepared to participate; bring appropriate clothing for physical activity following the PE clothing guidelines to change into. Students are required to change every PE period. Non-dress (not changing from clothes worn to school into PE clothes) will not be accepted.
  2. Be Respectful: treat people and property with respect, cooperate with others,
  3. Be Safe: Observe safety rules AT ALL TIMES: in locker room, gym, field, etc.
  4. No food, gum, candy, or drinks (except water) in PE or the locker rooms.
  5. Students must be in the locker roomBEFORE the tardy bell rings.
  6. Students are to leave personal belongings in their assigned lockers as they are NOT allowed to be brought out to PE class.
  7. When absent (excused) it is the student’s responsibility to get a make-up sheet for the class(es) that were missed. Students have two weeks to turn in the make-up work.

PE Clothing Guidelines

Changing clothes for PE is important for good hygiene, performance and safety. Dressing appropriately for physical activity is an important lifetime habit.

  1. Students must wear either MSMS PE clothes or a blue orblack plaint-shirt andblue or black plain shorts that are at least mid-thigh in length. STUDENTS NAME MUST BE WRITTEN ON BOTH SHIRT AND SHORTS. No nylons/tights/leggings may be worn.
  2. Students must wear athletic/tennis shoes (no cleats). Shoes must be tied or otherwise securely fastened to stay on your feet. Students must also wear socks with their shoes. No sandals, flats, slip-ons, boots, high heels or flip flops, etc.
  3. All jewelry must be removed prior to PE class, with the exception of stud earrings, this includes body piercings.
  4. Hats/visors (PLAIN-NO LOGOS) and sunglasses are allowed to be worn during PE class times ONLY.
  5. Students are encouraged to wear deodorant. However perfumes, body sprays and scented lotionsare notallowed on campus.
  6. For safety, long hair should be pulled back (pony tail).

Locker Room

  1. Each student will be issued their own locker in the locker rooms at the start of the school year. Once the locker is checked out to a student it is their responsibility to make sure the locker is checked in at the end of the year in the same condition as when it was checked out in the beginning.
  2. It is the students’ responsibility to keep their belongings in their locker and their locker locked. Students are responsible for thebelongings that they bring into the locker room.
  3. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT SHARE THEIR LOCKER COMBINATION WITH ANYONE.

Behavior Consequences

  1. Verbal warning+ loss of points+ low level referral
  2. Student/Teacher Conference + loss of points+ low level referral
  3. Parent contact + loss of points + low level referral
  4. Sent to the office with a referral- this is the last step in the process (OR if your behavior isseverethis can happen at any time) + loss of points.

Non-Dress Consequences

1.1st non dress = verbal warning + loss of points+ low level referral

2.2nd non dress = student/teacher conference + loss of points+ low level referral

3.3rd and consecutive non dresses = parent contact + loss of points+ low level referral

Participation

Students are expected to participate in every class. If you are unable to participate students should bring a note from their parent/guardian. If a studentis not able to participate for more than two days he/she needs a doctor’s note. Students who bring a doctors note will not be allowed to stay in class and must work in the office on an alternate assignment.

Grading

Students can earn 10 points each day. Gradesare based on points earned for skill development, participation, fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, citizenship, and dressing out. Students canalso lose points for any of the following: being inappropriately dressed for PE, having gum/food/drink/candy, inappropriate behavior, not participating etc. Written tests and quizzes will be given on each unit.Health points are earned by doing projects, tests and/or in-class assignments. On occasion, bonus points can be earned.
