Established in 1975, Mount Eliza Secondary College is a large single campus secondary college situated on the Mornington Peninsula some 50 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne. The College has set itself the mission of seeking to protect its community members and nurture a culture where individuals’ learning and thinking are valued as a lifelong process of growth through which they become active, responsible and caring members of a changing global society. It has an emphasis on developing its students as creative, caring, critical and competent thinkers. This mission is expressed in its Directions statement and other documents incorporated into the schools Charter.

The College is co-educational, caters for 700 to 900 students and enjoys a strong tradition of high retention rates and academic excellence. Specific Duties:

The primary role of this position is to manage and work with a team of people who are responsible for the care and maintenance of grounds and buildings and the security and safety of persons and property of Mount Eliza Secondary College

An ability to provide support for students at education risk by supporting a Hands On Learning environment at the College would be an advantage.

Typical Duties

  • Develop and input on computer a comprehensive College term and cyclic maintenance plan and calendar which will ensure that the grounds, equipment and buildings are kept in first rate condition;
  • Input appropriate data on the college computer system to record all repairs and maintenance and costs incurred;
  • Ensure all building works carried out meet statutory requirements;
  • Be completely familiar with the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems of the College and to keep operational manuals current and arrange regular services on equipment;
  • Work as part of a team to ensure that all OH & S requirements are met;
  • Carry out weekly (or as required) inspections of the school sites to determine work that needs to be undertaken and complete these works or engage (as required) the necessary trades to attend to tasks that falls outside own expertise;
  • Liaise with the College Principal to collate furniture and maintenance requirements;
  • Manage and plan daily work of all maintenance staff and work alongside them in the overall maintenance of the facilities;
  • Ensure that broken and / or damaged equipment and / or furniture is repaired or if appropriate disposed of (including removal from assets register);
  • Oversee the maintenance of the lockers of the College;
  • Oversee the daily cleaning of the grounds at the end of the day and be the first point of call for the Contract Cleaners;
  • Assist in the organisation of landscaping and beautification of College grounds using parents and/or students, this will include the organisation of Working Bees;
  • Manage the provision of security for grounds, buildings and equipment and all users of the College on a 24 hour per day, 7 days per week basis, including the hiring of College Facilities;
  • Other duties as assigned by the College Principal

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated computer skills to be capable of using Microsoft Office, the Department’s SMS software and Project Management Software if required;
  2. Knowledge of the requirements of the Building Act 1993 and an understanding of requirements of the Building Compliance Guidelines;
  3. Capacity to develop and implement improvement plans and maintain maintenance schedules for grounds and buildings;
  4. Well developed knowledge and skills and proven experience in general building and equipment maintenance and in dealing with contractors;
  5. Demonstrated organisational skills and a capacity to manage a large and complex physical environment;
  6. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including:
  • An ability to lead and manage staff and work as a member of a highly performing team
  • The ability to effectively liaise with College staff, community members, contractors and other agencies
  • The ability to report to and effectively liaise with the College Principal Team
