PRESS RELEASE

Mother to a dozen children – all at once!

21 Mentor Mothers nurture 176 children at 12 Udayan Ghars

New Delhi, 11th May 2012: Mother’s Day is round the corner and Aneesha can’t wait to celebrate with her 12 girls at Udayan Ghar, Mehrauli As she says, I’ll be celebrating Mother’s Day with my Udayan daughters and my two sons.”

Coming to Udayan Care in 2002 as a volunteer, today Aneesha in her mid thirties, is the youngest Mentor Mother to Udayan children, who are “the all-girl family I love. We’re growing together with each passing year – the older girls are slowly becoming companions, while the younger ones are a joy to help nurture.”

Based on a strategy called L.I.F.E: Living In Family Environment, each of the 12 Udayan Ghars is home to 12 -14 children so that each child is given individual attention. From a loving home, family bonding and a sense of belonging, to education, co-curricular activities and good health, children feel loved and well cared for.

As lifetime volunteers, our 21 Mentor Mothers are the backbone of this Group Foster Care Model, nurturing erstwhile orphaned or abandoned children as their own. They are with them in times of celebration and despair, enjoying all the joys of parenthood –attending Parent Teacher Association meetings at the children’s schools, feeling pride at children’s successes and at times anxiety at their problems, getting children married and indulging their Udayan grandchildren – among the everyday ups and downs that parents deal with.

Many Mentor Moms confess that experiencing the ‘empty nest feeling’ after their own children grew up and left, or going through a personal tragedy, they just came to spend time with children. Once at Udayan Ghars, they realised they wanted to do so much more for the children, that they took on Motherhood – all over again!

Adds Reena Tete, Director Programmes at Udayan Care, “An outstanding testimony to Udayan Care’s belief in collective action for restoring children’s rights, Udayan Ghars (homes) have enabled great civil society participation in the form of Mentor Mothers. Ordinary women with extraordinary sensitivity and commitment they are just like mothers that many children are blessed with.”
