At CAMH, the Resident will develop advanced skills in the assessment, pharmacologic treatment and comprehensive management of the full range of mood and anxiety disorders, and will also have the opportunity to focus on specific areas of interest, during the 6 or 12 month rotation. The Resident will also be exposed to the application of individual and group cognitive-behavioural and mindfulness-based psychotherapy for mood and anxiety disorders. Residents may select one or more supervisors for 4+ hours per week of supervision and will have the opportunity to do many "mock oral" style consultation interviews during the rotation. The Resident will become familiar with consultation and shared-care models of outpatient practice and with integrating knowledge derived from basic and clinical research into day-to-day practice. Some patients may be followed in specific naturalistic or controlled clinical trials within the clinic and/or may receive time limited multidisciplinary care and family intervention. Research participation is encouraged but not mandatory. The program is willing to customize the selective to fit the needs of individual trainees.

At CAMH, the Resident may choose to focus more on either mood or anxiety disorders if they wish, including Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder and other conditions. The Resident may also choose to conduct a research project, or participate in ongoing research in areas such as neurobiology, psychopharmacology, genetics of mood and anxiety disorders, brain imaging (PET, fMRI), among others. For residents interested in education opportunities, participation in the development and delivery of educational programs and international health work is offered.

/ The Sunnybrook Health Science Centre/ Women's College Health Sciences Centre
Child and Adolescent Anxiety Clinic / Primary Supervisor

At Sunnybrook & Women's College Health Sciences Centre, the selective offers the resident a unique opportunity to become involved in a wide variety of clinical and research activities across the lifespan. Clinically, the program provides consultation in the areas of treatment-resistant depression and bipolar disorder, mood disorders across the reproductive lifecycle, and seasonal affective disorder. Clinical supervision will be provided at the Sunnybrook site and, if there is a specific interest in Women's Mental Health, also at the Women's College site. Upon completion of the selective, the resident will have gained extensive expertise in the area of mood and anxiety disorders, providing a strong base of knowledge for a general psychiatry career, or an important building block for a future fellowship.

The Sunnybrook & Women's College Health Sciences Centre program is involved in clinical trials, population health studies, as well as basic science protocols, and the resident would be encouraged to participate in these, with the degree of involvement at the resident's discretion.

The Mood Disorder Psychopharmacology Unit (MDPU) at the UHN provides trainees an opportunity to be an integral member of an academic clinical research centre specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of mood disorders. The MDPU receives a high volume of clinical referrals providing for trainees ample opportunity to observe a consultative multidisciplinary approach. For trainees that are interested, research opportunities are varied and include both descriptive and interventional studies. The MDPU is the lead site of the International Mood Disorders Collaborative Project (IMDCP), a collaborative endeavour between the MDPU and the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. The IMDCP is a research platform that captures demographic, phenomenological, as well as anamnestic information regarding most individuals entering the program. The IMDCP is the repository of information providing the basis for descriptive studies. The MDPU is particularly interested in hypothesis generating and hypothesis testing studies that involve neuroendocrinology, neuropsychology, and neuroimaging. The MDPU regularly has trainees across multiple disciplines at various levels from local, national, and international universities.
