BRIDPORT & DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB
2015 SPRING SHOW SCHEDULE
The show will be held in the United Church Hall, East Street, Bridport on 28th March 2015. All Classes are open to members and non-members. Doors will be open to the public at 12.00 am. Light refreshments and raffle tickets will be available for purchase. The raffle will be drawn after the presentation of trophies at 3pm.
DIVISION 1 - HORTICULTURE
- One pot or bowl of flowering daffodils/narcissi
- One pot or bowl of any other kind of flowering bulb
- One pot of any kind of cactus/cacti or succulent(s)
- One pot of any flowering plant, other than bulbs
- One pot of any foliage plant
- One pot of alpine
The Elmes Challenge Cup will be awarded for the best exhibit in the Classes 1-6.
NB A range of containers will be available for setting up exhibits for Classes 7 – 26.
- One stem of a daffodil, any variety, in a container, having its trumpet longer than its petals
- One stem of a daffodil, any variety, in a container, having its trumpet shorter than its petals
- One stem of a double daffodil, any variety, in a container
- One stem of a multi-headed daffodil, any variety, in a container
- Three stems of any ONE variety of trumpet daffodil in a container. The trumpets must be longer than the petals.
- Three stems of any ONE variety of daffodil in a container. The trumpets must be shorter than the petals.
- Three stems of any ONE variety of double daffodil in a container
- Three stems of any ONE variety of multi-headed daffodil in a container
- Three stems of any ONE variety of miniature flowering daffodils (having blooms of less than 50 mm across), in a container
- Three stems of any variety of daffodil
The Tamblyn Trophy will be awarded for the best entry in Classes 7 – 16.
- Five stems of any ONE variety of primrose (excluding polyanthus) in a container
- Three stems of any ONE variety of muscari (grape hyacinth) in a container
- Three stems of any ONE variety of polyanthus in a container
- Three stems of tulips, any variety, in a container
- Five stems of pansies or violas in a container
- Three camellia flower heads floating on water
- Five hellebore flower heads floating on water
- Three stems of any ONE variety of flower, in a container, not mentioned in Classes 7 - 23
- One stem of any variety of flowering tree or shrub in a container
- One vase containing one stem each of five different species of spring flowers (not trees or shrubs) from your garden
The Jessie Barrett Cup will be awarded for the best entry in Classes 17 – 26.
- Three different herbs in a container
- Three stems of pulled rhubarb with leaf
- Six “chitted” potatoes to be presented in an egg tray
- One six-cell tray, approx. 22 x 15cm in any one variety of vegetable seedlings
- One six-cell tray, approx. 22 x 15cm in any one variety of flower seedlings, not sweet peas
- Six sweet peas in root trained or card tubes
- Pot of salad leaves
- A cabbage with trimmed roots
- Five spears of sprouting broccoli
The Bob Mills Trophy will be awarded for the highest aggregate score for Horticultural Classes
1 – 35.
DIVISION 2 - FLORAL EXHIBITS
An exhibit is composed of NATURAL plant material, with or without accessories, wholly contained in the space specified in the Show Schedule.
- Easter Message. An exhibit. Space allowed 60cm in width and depth, height unlimited
- Spring Greens. An exhibit. Space allowed 45cm in width and depth and height
- Arrangement in a Teapot. Space allowed 45cm in width and depth and height
- A Book of Flowers. Space allowed 25cm in width and depth and height
- Floral Easter Egg. Space allowed 25cm in width and depth and height
- Strike a Light – arrangement in a matchbox. Max 10 cm width and depth and height
The Ernie Lane Cup will be awarded for the best entry in Classes 36 – 41.
The Ewens Trophy will be awarded for the highest aggregate score in Classes 36 - 41.
DIVISION 3 - HOMECRAFT
PRESERVES
Plain jars must be used for showing preserves, trade names are not acceptable. Twist top lids are used for showing, they must be new. No wax disc is needed under a twist top. Jars should be well filled, labels plain, stating content and dated.
- One jar of any marmalade with Seville oranges
- One jar of any marmalade with any other citrus fruit
- One jar of any jelly
- One jar of any jam
- One jar of lemon curd*
- One jar of pickle (state main ingredients used)
- One jar of chutney (state main ingredients used)
*Lemon curd must be covered with a “breathing” top (that is a wax circle and cellophane top)
COOKERY
Use your own recipes. If a plate is needed, use a plain white/paper plate.
- Five miniature sponges
- Easter bonnet cake (max 20 cm), to be judged on decoration only
- Five Easter biscuits
- Baked cheesecake (max 20 cm)
- Five Chelsea buns
- Five cheese scones
- Banana loaf
- Rhubarb tart (max 20 cm)
All items to be displayed in CLEAR PLASTIC BAGS – these will be provided for staging.
The Whitfield Trophy will be awarded for the best entry in Classes 42 – 56.
The Samways Cup will be awarded for the highest aggregate in Classes 42 – 56.
DIVISION 4 - ART AND HANDICRAFT
All exhibits must not previously have been shown in the Bridport Gardening Club’s shows.
- A painting, any medium, any subject
- A recycled garment (attach description of what it was before)
- Knitted gloves
- Homemade wooden item
- A dressed doll
- Decorated heart (any medium)
- Tapestry or cross stitched item
- Easter card
The D W Legg Cup will be awarded for the highest aggregate in Classes 57 - 64.
DIVISION 5 - PHOTOGRAPHY
Colour or monochrome, all photos must have been taken in the last 5 years and must not have been exhibited previously in the Club’s shows. Digital or conventional photographs are allowed but it should be what the photographer saw through the viewfinder. Removing objects, making composites, or pasting new objects is not acceptable. Photo and mount, if used, should not exceed 20 x 15 cm.
- A Dorset landscape
- Rough and smooth (two images)

- Spring Dazzle
- Sunrise/sunset (one photo)
- A Winter garden
The Scadden Trophy will be awarded for the best entry in Classes 65 – 70.
The Stanley Dean Cup will be awarded for the highest aggregate in Classes 65 – 70.
OVERALL SHOW WINNERS
The Charlie Barrett Cup will be awarded to the runner-up
The Cresswell Cup will be awarded to the exhibitor having the highest overall aggregate score.
SHOW REGULATIONS
- An exhibitor cannot make more than 2 entries in the same class.
- Unless otherwise stated in the schedule, two or more persons may not exhibit separately in the same class from the same garden.
- The Committee reserves the right to accept or reject any entry.
- The place of the exhibition will be open to receive exhibits on the evening before the Show from 6pm till 8pm and from 8.30am to 10.15am on the morning of the Show, after which time no specimen can be received. All exhibitors must leave the hall by 10.15am when judging will commence.
- The Committee will take all ordinary care of the plants, fruit or flowers exhibited, but will not be responsible for any loss or damage which may occur, and any exhibit remaining after the close of the Show must be absolutely at the owners risk.
- Exhibits must not be removed from the Show before 3.30pm.
- Judging will be conducted under the relevant National Code of Rules. Varieties bearing names not included in the respective National Registers, or any supplements thereto shall not be eligible for exhibition in competition Classes.
- In all Classes the first prize will be £2.00, second prize £1.00 and third prize 50 pence.
- Protest or objections to the qualifications of an exhibitor or his/her exhibit must be made in writing before 2pm on the day of the Show and a deposit of 25p lodged with the Show Manager. The deposit will be forfeit to funds if the Club consider the objection frivolous.
- The Show Subcommittee, whose decision shall be final, shall determine any question not covered by the foregoing rules.
- All trophies to be returned at least one month before the respective Show.
