Monday ELA Morning Work Week #8

Harry Houdini was a performer in the early 20th century. He often did magic tricks. He found a way to really impress his audience. He learned how to escape. He could get out of ropes and handcuffs. In fact, he could escape from most any situation. His wife was his helper. The two of them performed on the stage many times. They were also in many movies.
Harry worked hard to become very strong. He needed to be strong to perform his escapes. Everyone loved his tricks. He escaped from a giant milk can. The can was filled with water. He always had to come up with new tricks. Some magicians could pull a rabbit out of a hat. That trick was too easy for Harry. He learned how to make an elephant disappear. After he did that trick, he was even more famous.
Houdini spent his life doing tricks. He traveled from Germany to the United States. He also showed his tricks in England. He showed people how he did his tricks. He wanted them to know that his tricks weren’t really magic. He liked to expose people who tried to pretend they were something they were not.

Thursday ELA Morning Work #8

(1) Interstate highways stretch in all directions in the U.S. These highways help people travel between states. Before the 1950s, the roads were too poorly made for people. People could not drive from state to state. In 1956, a law was passed. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill that would build new roads. The bill promised to make 4,100 miles of road. These roads would be all across the country.
(2) The highways, however, caused trouble for some cities. The plans for the new roads split some cities apart. This meant that some people had to lose their homes. They had to even lose their neighborhoods. People did not want their cities to be torn apart.
(3) Even though the plan had problems, the highways helped the U.S. grow. The highways allowed goods to be driven across the country for a lower cost. The roads also saved people time. People no longer had to take long and slow roads. Today, the interstate highway is about 47,000 miles long. Millions of people drive on these roads each day.

1. Which question does paragraph 2 answer?

/ A. / Why did some people in the cities want the highways?
/ B. / How many people lost their homes because of the highways?
/ C. / What problems did cities have with the new highways?
/ D. / Who lived in the cities when the highways were being built?
