SUMMARY OF MAIN FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Child Psychologist at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH) will work to support the inter-professional team to ensure the program delivers world class child and family-centred care to patients. TheChild Psychologist must ensure they abide by all policies, programmes and initiatives to support the NMCH’s vision, mission and values.
The Psychologist designs, carries out and supervises psychological assessments of a child’s current cognitive, academic, emotional and/or behavioural functioning in relation to their medical or psychiatric history. She/he works collaboratively as a member of the health care team. Furthermore, the Psychologist integrates research and practice by creating, utilizing and/or disseminating new knowledge.
The Psychologist assesses and diagnoses cognitive, academic, emotional and/or behavioural conditions in children with a wide range of medical/psychiatric conditions. She/he selects evidence-based interventions appropriate to the child’s presentation and results of assessment, including: play therapy, family therapy, individual therapy, group therapy, psycho-educational interventions and consultation with appropriate medical, school or rehabilitation personnel.
Other responsibilities:
- Develops performance goals and objectives to align with strategic goals and objectives of the programs and NMCH.
- Adheres to hospital standards, policies, and procedures in all aspects of providing care, and integrates hospital policies with professional standards of practice.
- Advocate to influence health care practice, policy and outcomes.
- Participates in hospital/departmental program committees.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Candidate must be registered as/eligible to be registered as a Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and abide by its regulations, guidelines and directives.
- Minimum Education Required: Masters in Clinical / Counselling /Education.
- Relevant clinical experience with children and their families living with chronic, life-threatening illnesses, including issues related to loss, palliation and bereavement.
- Able to carry out their duties with minimal formal supervision.
- Fully accountable for own practice within their professional practice model.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
- Understanding of health care delivery systems and the practice of psychology in an academic & tertiary/quaternary setting.
- Ability to collaborate effectively as a member of the health care team and to take initiative and leadership as appropriate.
- Good written and oral communication skills and the ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
- Ability to deal with issues of morbidity related to medical conditions.
- Establishes and maintains good working relationships with clinical teams to meet patient and family needs.
- Consistently behaves in a manner that supports the values of innovation, integrity, collaboration and excellence.
- Strong planning and organisational skills.
- Ability to relate well with children and families.
- Practices in a manner consistent with the philosophy of continuous quality improvement and evidence-based practice.
- Remains abreast of current literature and relevant developments in clinical practice.
- Exemplary communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Relevant technological and computer literacy.
- Strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Strong conceptual thinking skills.
- Able to collaborate with a range of stakeholders, both internal and external to the NMCH.
