Mogollon Rendezvous 2011 Outpost Report

Outpost Area: Marksman

Activity: Air Rifles

Author: Darrin Nelson (March, 2011) Some comments are from 2009

Summary / goals of activity:

· Provide a safe and fun shooting environment

* The air rifle area was not operational in 2011 due to safety concerns. There was no back stop to catch the pellets, and a campsite was located directly behind air rifle area. Before events start, the ADC needs to ensure a proper backstop has been installed before shooting commences*

Safety Concerns:

1.Shooting area

2. Lack of proper backstop

3. proximity to camps

Staffing needs. (Assignments, and tasks to man)

1. Two NRA certified range safety officers, minimum of 4 staff total

Layout and location of area. (Sq feet, tables, canopies and chairs, etc use photos)

1. Location is HORRENDOUS! No shooting should take place in the camping area.

2. The range in and of itself is great. Nice shade, nice tables. Just in the wrong place.

Special skills, training or certifications needed.

1. NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO)

Materials list (qty, source, COST, prep, leadtimes, etc)

  1. Rifles and ammo are in the possession of Erv Rowley (602-540-7802), recommend picking up before event.
  2. There are a total of thirteen rifles issued. Recommend only ten be used at a time, as there are station for ten boys to use the rifles comfortably.
  3. Each student should be given 10 pellets to shoot. There were 850 boys at the 2011 rendezvous. Figure at least 8500 rounds for the boys, another 3000 for the leaders and you will need a minimum of 11500 rounds (plus 300 for the Coulter run). There are currently 16000 rounds in the air rifles storage boxes.
  4. Targets were tine cans hung by string; this is cheaper than paper targets. Recommend using paper targets for Coulter run to help grade each shot.

Workflow Narrative of how to make it work and biggest challenges.

· Have a “safety meeting going while the participants are waiting to shoot. Have on RSO incharge of the range and one in charge of the safety meeting. After the safety issues are

discussed the team is released to the range safety officer for the shooting disciplines.

· Safety is always the biggest hurdle. Especially when the camp is so crowded and the range isright in the middle of it all. If the range backstop would have been in place it would havebeen a bit better.

· Coaches. Coaches need to stay out of the activity. The team captain is the only one

recognized by the air rifle staff with the authority to speak for his team. This ticks the

coaches off but causes the captain to take control and learn leadership.

Scoring strategy (team dress, cheer/spirit, teamwork, time (if timed), quality of work, etc)

1. Total of 10 points is possible for this event/ each boy gets ten shots

a. Team unity (i.e. the entire team was present at the activity all together)

b. Team spirit (i.e. team cheer/yell)

c. Range Safety

2. Scoring was a combine of shooting score and A – C attributes

3. Shooters stand or set behind the picnic tables and shoot at the targets (distance around 25 feet)

Outpost awards: (Typical awards, details, and costs.)

  1. Red Rider BB gun was awarded for the entire marksmanship area best score ($34.99)
  2. Sling shot (wrist rockets) were awarded for best individual shooter/team ($8.99)

Transportation of materials, set-up, tear down resources or special tools.

1. There is a storage shed without a lock next to the shooting range, so you can store the guns and ammo at night provided you have a lock on the rifle boxes.

2. Need to support targets (cable, string, etc), targets should be cans and paper targets.

3. The rifle boxes are very large and need either a pick up truck, or trailer to transport.
