PROFESSIONAL TRAINING LOG-BOOK SYSTEM:

The keeping of a log-book record of training activities is standard good practice in educational, professional and industrial organisations. The main objectives of the system are:

(1) to provide a permanent record of the training undertaken whilst in industry.

(2) to provide a means of assessing your progress and achievements.

(3) to encourage you to develop your skills in written communication, accurate

and reliable record keeping and self-assessment.

(4) to form the basis of discussion and comment between yourself, your

industrial supervisor/s and any visiting academic tutor.

(5) to provide you with a reference document which may be used later in your

career (providing it does not contain any confidential industrial information).

The log-book system for BSc Industrial Year students relates to three components:

(A)An A5/A4 Log-book which enables you to make written entries on either a

daily or weekly basis.

Entries should cover such information as:

  • New projects or tasks
  • How you undertook the task
  • Technical points
  • The use of literature, IT or record keeping
  • Design and preparation of oral or written presentations
  • Special courses on Health and Safety
  • Presentation skills
  • Data Storage/LIMS Systems etc.

It is essential that your entries are concise, accurate and reflect your observations as to the training experience gained. It is also important that in making these entries you do not neglect your normal industrial work activities.

(B) A Monthly Log-book Report.

One Monthly Log-Book Report form to be completed at the end of each month (12 Report forms for your use to be found at the back of this document - see pages 4 to 15).

Monthly Log-book Report
Name: ......
Month: ...... Date: ......
Objectives of the month
Description of activities
Conclusion of achievements
Plan for the next month

Each page should report:

(i) The objectives of the month.

(ii) Description of your activities, illustrating technical points (both chemical and computational).

(iii) Conclusion of what was/or was not achieved during the month.

(iv) Based on the above make a realistic plan for the next month.

Your report should be concise, accurate and contain a critical assessment of your achievements or short-comings during the month, and a course of action in addressing the short-comings.

At the bottom of the page sign your name. Also include the signature of your industrial supervisor and visiting academic tutor if they are involved in completing the monthly log-book report.

Complete all monthly Log-book Reports (pages 4 - 15) and ensure that they are available for inspection on request by your industrial supervisor and/or visiting academic tutor.

(C) Student Self Assessment.

You have attached three forms:

(1) Guidelines for Student Self Assessment (page 16)

(2) Self Assessment Sheet (page 17)

(3) Self Assessment Evidence Sheets (pages 18 - 20)

Prior to each Professional Training visit by an academic member of staff you should refer to the Guidelines for Student Self Assessment (page 16) to undertake a self-assessment of your own PT performance. Assessment is made using the same format that is used for your P-credit evaluation. There are five categories: Personal/Social Skills, Interest and Attitude, Communication Skills, Organisation Skills, and Technical Achievement. Assess your progress for each category (grade 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5) according to the outline descriptions given. Mark your progress grade by ticking the appropriate boxes on the Self Assessment Sheet on page 17.

In addition, you should record evidence to support your reasons for choosing the particular progress grades. This information is to be recorded on the Self Assessment Evidence Sheets (1 for each industrial visit, pages 18 - 20).

Hopefully, you will be encouraged to see a positive line of progress throughout the three assessment periods (e.g. grades change from 2 to 5), with evidence to explain how this was achieved.

You will be requested to show and discuss these documents with your industrial supervisorand visiting academic tutor at the time of each Industrial Visit.

Please note that the Level P1 module document “Tutor’s Industrial Visit Report” now has a section to record the observations of the visiting academic tutor.
