Conference Description

Many children with ASD have difficulty learning to talk, while students with Down syndrome can have a lifelong challenge making their speech comprehensible to strangers. This course will cover the empirical and theoretical bases for Milieu Communication Teaching and Broad Target Speech Recasts. In the first part of the course, Dr. Yoder will discuss Milieu Communication Teaching, a particularly promising method to aid the transition to spoken communication. There will be much emphasis on details of this therapy approach. Attendees will be able to identify for whom this treatment works, how many sessions per week are needed to impact expressive language, and why. Later in the day, Dr. Yoder will cover the empirical and theoretical bases for Broad Target Speech Recasts, one of the only treatments shown to have an effect on the comprehensibility of conversational speech in students with Down syndrome. Results of a recent study that identified for whom this treatment works and why, and details on a new instrument that helps to identify these children, will be provided. Course attendees will come away with knowledge that will improve their clinical activities with young children with ASD, the younger siblings of children with ASD, and elementary-aged students with Down syndrome.
