Master of Science in Bioengineering

University of Illinois at Chicago & Politecnico di Milano

Introduction

This master is a coordinated project between the Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to allow students enrolled in Politecnico’sLaureaSpecialistica in IngegneriaBiomedica to obtain the degree of Master of Science in Bioengineering from UIC while working towards their degree in Italy.

The students attend courses at the Politecnico for the first semester of the program (”Spring”, March-June), and then they spend the second semester (”Fall”, August-December) at UIC, attending courses there. The first semester of the master (Spring) corresponds to the second semester of the Italian academic year of the LaureaSpecialistica. Residence at UIC is mandatory during the Fall semester. Students wishing to transfer to the MS degree program in Bioinformatics will be able to transfer after arrival in Chicago.

At POLIMI, students must attend 15 CFU chosen among the following courses:

  • Biomedical signal processing and medical images (Proff. Cerutti and Signorini), 10 CFU
  • Technologies for sensors and clinical instrumentation (Prof. Andrea Aliverti), 5 CFU (half of the class)
  • Bioartificialsystems at the micro and nanoscale (Proff. Vesentini, Rasponi), 10 CFU

The exam related to the attended courses must be passed at the first useful date, and evaluation will count for both POLIMI and UIC.

At UIC, students must attend at least 3 courses, at least 2 of which offered by the Department of Bioengineering, plus performing laboratory activity mandatory for the fulfillment of the thesis (5 credits of a Lab course at POLIMI will be granted). The courses must be chosen at the Politecnico di Milano, to make sure that the necessary equivalences (”equipollenze”) with the Italian courses can be properly established, and therefore the marks transferred to the student’s Italian academic career.

Attendance to the courses is mandatory. The overall final mark of a course must be at least C. The overall average of the grades must be at least B. The Master of Science is granted upon defending a thesis, which has an advisor from UIC and an advisor from Politecnico.

Calendar and Deadlines

Starting July 2017: fill out the form at to be added to the mailing list of UIC prospective students. This will allow us to send you any update regarding of the program.

September 2017: submit the preapplication our Secretary office () who will check the documents and help you preparing the final documents that will be mailed to UIC.

October 2017: documents must reach UIC.

March 2018: UIC courses at the Politecnico start.

August 2018: Students leave to Chicago. Courses at UIC start.

December 2018: Final exams at UIC, students may return to Milan.

Fill out the form at be added to the mailing list of UIC prospective students for next Academic year. This will allow us to send you any update regarding of the program.

In particular, an introductory meeting will take place on December 15 2017 late morning (final schedule to be determined) also with a representative of the UIC, both for enrolled and prospective students.

Cost

Students enrolled in the program will have to pay to UIC the tuition fees for two semesters and the living expenses during the semester in Chicago. The tuition fees are approximately $19000 (subject to changes every year) for the two semesters. This corresponds roughly to the instate rate and it is actually the lowest possible rate for Bioengineering at UIC.

One fellowship per year will be given by UIC to the best student with the highest scores in the 15 CFU obtained at POLIMI.

Admission Requirements

To join the program students must be enrolled in the LaureaSpecialistica in IngegneriaBiomedica at the Politecnico di Milano at the beginning of the Master (II semester of every academic year).

When filing the preapplication in mid-September 2017, students must have graduated or to be enrolled in the III year of “IngegneriaBiomedica (primo livello)” with the expectation to graduate before the session of March 2018 (i.e., by the beginning of the Master).

Students must also have an average mark above 24/30 and a TOEFL score higher than 80 with these minimum scores: writing 21, speaking 20, listening 17, reading 19. Alternatively, students can present a IELTS with a score of at least 6.5 with these minimum scores: writing 6, speaking 6, listening 6, reading 6.

The requirement about TOEFL/IELTS must be fulfilled before the actual application to UIC is filed at the end of October 2017.
