MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE GRADUATE COUNCIL
September 7, 2001


PRESENT: Dr. Chitwood, Dr. Fischer, Dr. Hoffheimer, Dr. Prasad, Dr. Burkett, Dr. Watson, Dr. Neff for Dr. Eagles, Dr. Graves for Dr. Miller, Dr. Shughart for Dr. Cook, Mr. Godfrey, Dean Meador, Dr. J. Cole, Dr. D. Cole, and Dr. Eftink and Guest Dr. Avery.

1. The minutes of April 7, 2001 were approved by mail ballot.

2. Dr. Mitchell Avery responded to questions concerning the proposed course requests from the Department of Medicinal Chemistry.

3. On a motion by Shughart, seconded by Fischer, the following new courses were approved, subject to the Department providing the Council with the required forms and information.

MEDC 611. DRUG ACTION AND DESIGN I. INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER -AIDED LIGAND DESIGN. Modern molecular modeling methods and techniques pertinent to molecular design and the simulation of molecular properties and interactions. Examples include modeling of small molecules at the level of mechanics calculations up to ab inito calculations; homology modeling of proteins and related validation methods; docking interactions of ligands and receptors. (3).

MEDC 612. DRUG ACTION AND DESIGN II. QUANTITATIVE STRUCTURE-ACTIVITY RELATIONSHIPS. Introduction to simple mathematical models of drug action (2D-OSAR) and application of the concepts to the use of computer-aided drug design to develop 3D pharmacophore modes based on quantitative structure-activity relationships (3D-OSAR). (3).

MEDC 613. DRUG ACTION AND DESIGN III: DRUGS AFFECTING THE CENTRAL AND PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. Discussion and application of the design, synthesis, and biological activities of drugs affecting both the central and peripheral nervous system. (3).

MEDC 614. DRUG ACTION AND DESIGN IV: CHEMOTHERAPY OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES. Overview of antimicrobial and antiviral chemotherapy as related to drug design, chemical syntheses, structural classes, mechanisms of pharmacological action, toxicites, resistance mechanisms and clinical usefulness. (3).

MEDC 615. DRUG ACTION AND DESIGN V: CANCER CHEMOTHERAPY.
Detailed examination of the field of cancer chemotherapy as related to chemical syntheses, structural classes, mechanisms of pharmacological action, toxicites, resistance mechanisms and clinical usefulness. (3).

MEDC 618. BIOORGANIC CHEMISTRY. The study of the chemical interactions and catalytic strategies fundamental to drug design and development, using the principles of organic chemistry as the intellectual framework for addressing biological problems at the molecular level. (3).

MEDC 620. COMBINATORIAL CHEMISTRY: THEORY & PRACTICE. Parallel synthesis and product analysis sequel to molecular modeling and QSAR . (3).

4. On a motion by Shughart, seconded by Graves, the following course in the Department of Political Science was approved:

POL 650. RESEARCH IN POLITICS. Introduction to the philosophy and practice of Research in political science. (3).

5. The request by the Department of Political Science to change POL 651, 652, and 653 was denied.

6. On a motion by Watson, seconded by Hoffheimer, the Council approved the request by the School of Education to change EDSP 674 from 6 to 3 graduate credit hours.

7. On a motion by Shughart, seconded by Graves, the request to change EDLD 797 DISSERTATION to a Z graded course was approved.

8. The motion by Shughart, seconded by Prasad, to approve the request by the Department of Music to add MUS 575 was denied.

9. On a motion by Prasad, seconded by Graves, the following new course in the Department of Geology was approved:

GEOL 518. QUANTITATIVE METHODS IN GEOLOGY AND GEOLOGICAL
ENGINEERING. Quantitative methods in geology and geological engineering. (3).

10. The Council approved deleting EDLD 651 INDIVIDUAL STUDY from the Catalog description in Leadership and Counselor Education in the Specialist K-12 Program and adding EDLD 756 INTERNSHIP IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION.

11. The motion by Watson, seconded by Neff, to approve course changes and deletions in the Department of English failed.

12. On a subsequent motion by Hoffheimer, seconded by Shughart, the Council approved the following changes and deletions in the English Department except for ENGL 511. Approval for this course change was subject to deleting "content varies; may be repeated for credit."

13. The Council approved the following Catalog change for the School of Education:

Delete: EDLD 661 INDEPENDENT STUDY from Specialist in K-12 Administration degree program.

Add: EDLD 756 INTERNSHIP IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION.
P. 162 add . . .. Also required are 6 semester hours of Internship in Educational Administration (EDLD 756) and oral and written comprehensive exams.

Delete: . . . Also required are 3 semester hours of Applied Research via independent study (EDLD 651) and oral and written exams.

14. After review of the attached Graduate Catalog changes and additions, the Council voted to approve the changes and additions as modified in the Council's discussion.

15. Dr. Eftink provided the Council with information concerning the proposed review of graduate programs. The Council discussed plans to implement the review process.
