Minutes of the Communications Committee Meeting

24 June 2004

Present: Richard Avery, Rebecca Strelow, Nick Nichols,

Joe Fierova, G.R. Davis, Clayton Bankson, Late arrivals: Cythia Elliot and Deacon Bob Sturm.

Meeting called to order at 7:00 pm.

The Communications Committee budget of $6152 has been approved. Line items are

1)paper and printing = $4208,

2)postage = $600,

3)office supplies = $1200, and

4)entertainment/socials = $144.

The third edition of The JORS Good News is being printed by Southeastern Printers. Rebecca will apply address labels to 711 copies. Rich has email addresses for 174 parish families which he and Rebecca will enter into the contacts book. The August issue will NOT be mailed but parishioners will be notified by email and copies will be available for pick-up in the vestibule.

GR reported on website updates that make weekly bulletins and parish newsletters available on-line.

Rich reported that the parish calendar can be published at for $59.95 per year. He described some of the features of this website, included the ability to conduct various types of searches (alter server schedule, lector schedule, etc.) The ORS website will have a link to the Church Events calendar website. We await final approval from the parish staff.

Parish Secretary Kay Beerman asks that we reserve a room for our meeting far in advance. Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 22nd at 7:00 pm.

Rich has edited the form for submitting news items for review by the parish staff and is awaiting final approval before the forms are to be posted on the parish website and left in the workroom for all to use.

Clayton reported that Anthony Alamo will build two bulletin boards for the parish.

Clayton enquired about the usefulness of a parish scrapbook. It was agreed that a volunteer is to be sought by announcements in the weekly bulletin and parish newsletter. This person, hopefully with attributes of an archivists, is to assume responsibility for maintaining a parish scrapbook.

Deacon Bob reported that Father Chuck was interviewed by Channel 7 and clips appeared on TV on Tuesday.

GR presented information from Joel Fisher, church directories representative for Olan Mills Studio (details elsewhere.) Just at the moment when it appeared that we had committed to having Olin Mills do our parish directory, discussion turned to doing the directory in-house with parishioner volunteers. To many committee members, Father Chuck’s preference for Olan Mills was exceedingly clear, yet Deacon Bob expressed an interest in further investigating the feasibility of doing the directory in-house which has the benefit of involving parishioners and promoting fellowship. Clayton instructed Joe to check into the prices of digital cameras for the next meeting which could be used to do the directory in-house. It was noted that John Cetone had been involved in the printing of the previous directory, and that it was not clear the level of cost that would be involved. This action effectively delays the pursuit of an agreement with Olan Mills.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:47 pm. Rich, Rebecca, and GR remained to insert the July Parish Calendar into the weekly bulletin.

Respectfully submitted,

GR Davis

Secretary
