Job Purpose:
  1. An internal consultancy role that applies analytical skills, business process and knowledge of the University’s computer based systems to recommend solutionsin line with the University’s strategy
  2. Responsible for identifying business needs: eliciting, analyzing, validating and documenting business, organizational and/or operational requirements and processes and validate that the design meets these requirements, acceptance criteria and business benefits.

Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities (1 - 11 bullet points maximum)
  1. Analyse operational challenges,conduct root cause analysis and propose solutions. Develop and maintain knowledge and understanding of theorganisation, processes and systems to enable detailed analysis and methodical review of systems and business processes; assess complex situations and problems, conduct gap and impact analysis and deliver recommendations for new processes and solutions in accordance with the University's strategic objectives.
  1. Assess the feasibility & cost/benefits of alternative processes and system options and make recommendations based on this assessment. Conduct pre-project analysis including the assessment of new technologies and support the shaping of new work initiatives and development of business case and project initiation documents.
  1. Elicit, assess, prioritise and produce user requirements and process improvements including as is and to be process maps.Provide functional specifications and any other design documentation needed to ensure the successful specification of development requirements and verify that design meets requirements.
  1. Produce logical system designs and prototyping to enable subsequent production of physical design by developers.
  1. Validate system and user testing approach and acceptance criteria are met.Create test strategies, scenarios, scriptsand data and perform and co-ordinate testing activities as required.
  1. Develop own skills & knowledge and share best practice. Maintain & develop own environmental knowledge (applications/business processes/role/industry) for identification of business change improvements.
  2. Contribute to the ongoing development and organisation of the team. As required work collaboratively with other members of the team to deliver assigned work, resolve issues and improve processes.
  1. Be responsible, in consultation with the Project Managers, for overseeing and co-ordinating own work.
  2. Undertake any other routine tasks or project management activities that may be assigned from time to time.

The post holder will be expected to undertake the duties as part of an integrated support team and will be expected to adopt priorities and engage in activities which promote the effective working of the whole team.
The post holder will be expected to liaise with relevant members of the University, with IT vendors, as appropriate and with colleagues in other institutions and related organisations.
It is expected that the duties will be performed in the light of the relevant activities in Higher Education generally. The post holder will be expected to be aware of the activities and initiatives being formulated nationally within the relevant specialist area and will be expected to take part in such activities should they be relevant to and of benefit to the work being undertaken locally.

To maintain the relevant level of professional expertise and qualifications to discharge the duties of a professional specialist and to agree with Business Analyst Team Manager on a relevant professional development programme.
Occasional out of hours working may be required to perform certain tasks on the system whilst minimising disruption to users.
Person Specification
Criteria / Essential / Desirable / How to be assessed
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience: / Degree, HND, NVQ4 qualified in a relevant subject or professional qualification.
Production of business process documentation and process mapping.
Production of documentation enabling end users to use computer applications or administrative systems.
Proven ability to gather and review requirements, developing suitable processes and reviewing solutions.
Liaison with users/customers. / Other IT related qualifications.
ISEB Business Analyst qualifications or similar.
Business Analyst experience supporting delivery of change projects in HE sector.
ITIL Foundation certified or experience working in an environment that uses best practice service methodologies such as ITIL.
