goal setting

Guidelines:

  1. Make your individual goals consistent with team goals.
  2. Set high, but realistic goals. Visualize success.
  3. Develop a burning desire to attain your goals. Be competitive and think like a winner. A person moves towards and becomes like that in which he thinks.
  4. When you reach a goal, set a new one.
  5. Understand everybody is running a different “Race.”
  6. Put your goals in a place where you can see them everyday.

Soccer Season Goals: These are examples - think of your own.

  1. Average a goal/assist in every other game.
  2. To allow no shots on goal.
  3. Start a shut out streak
  4. To win the conference/state championship.

Practice Goals: Again these are examples - think of your own.

  1. Give more of a consistent effort each practice.
  2. Work on specific weakness before or after practice - "Champions put in a little extra effort!"
  3. Be more enthusiastic and let it rub off on others.
  4. To be the first to arrive and the last to leave practice.
  5. Master my technical fundamentals (ball control, passing, shooting, receiving, etc…)
  6. To improve my tactical awareness on the field.
  7. Respond positively to coaches' constructive criticism.

General Goals

  1. Bring grade point average up this semester.
  2. Not to miss any classes.
  3. Get in better physical condition.
  4. Be more understanding and patient with others.

don't quit: In working towards anything that is worth attaining, there are going to be minor setbacks. Goal Setting gives you confidence and minor set backs only intensify your determination to achieve your goals. Don't get discouraged. Be MENTALLY and PHYSICALLY TOUGH! A winner finds a way to get the job done, and done with no short cuts/excuses.

WHAT NUMBER ARE YOU?

60% of people have no specific general goals at all. They only have short-range goals for the immediate time.

30% of all people think about goals, wish they could attain them, but usually procrastinate themselves out of the picture.

7% of all people have identified goals but fail to write them down. Their goals get lost and bobbled around inside their heads and are essentially no use.

3% of all people have specific written goals. They are working towards obtaining them. Written goals are to keep you on track and to remind yourself if you are doing anything to reach your goals.

"TO STRIVE, TO SEEK, TO FIND, AND NOT TO YIELD!"

"DON'T WAIT FOR YOUR SHIP TO COME, SWIM OUT TO IT!"

"SUCCESS IS A PEACE OF MIND WHICH IS A DIRECT RESULT OF SELF-SATISFACTION IN KNOWING YOU DID YOUR BEST TO BECOME THE BEST THAT YOU ARE CAPABLE OF BECOMING"

-John Wooden

Factors to consider when setting goals:

You can only determine personal goals. The team will decide TEAM GOALS.

State goals in a positive and not a negative manner.

Write down your goals and make them specific.

Make goals realistic, compatible, and attainable.

You must think high to rise high. Talk to yourself and teammates about not only success, but also failure. Forget about last season. What do you want to do this year? Think about the future and have a mental image of yourself succeeding and obtaining all your goals.
