Game Notes:

·  South Mountain took the lead first with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning. A pair of singles and a wild pitch put runners at second and third with two outs, and Jacob Aguilar hit a grounder to short. Shortstop Carlos Higuera goosed the throw to first and pulled Austin Maltby off the bag as one run crossed. With runners on the corners, the runner on first ran down to second, and a high throw allowed the runner on third to score to make it 2-0.

·  Arizona Western rallied with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Tyler Phillips singled to lead off the inning, and Judah Zickafoose came in to run for him. Zickafoose stole second and third and came home on a poor throw down to third to make it 2-1. Two batters later, Brody Kato ripped a double, and Franky Chavez hit a blooper to right field that just stayed fair. Zach Boehler knocked both home with a triple down the right field line and a 3-2 lead. He came home when Higuera lined a double to deep centerfield for a 4-2 lead.

·  Trayson Kubo came on in relief when Matador starter Carlos Vega was injured in the sixth inning. Kubo came on with one on and two outs and a 2-0 count to the batter at the plate, but 10 straight balls both loaded the bases and walked in a run to cut the Matador lead to 4-3. Kubo got out of the jam with a groundout to end the inning, but the problems weren’t over yet.

·  After the Matadors went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, South Mountain stayed patient at the plate and knocked in a pair of runs. With one on and one out, Nick Lacayo tied the game with a single and went to third on a double by Brian Kiser. After a walk loaded the bases with one out, Vinnie Tarantola knocked a grounder to second but raced down the line to beat out the double play and plate Lacayo for a 5-4 lead to win.

·  It seemed like that lead would stand, as Vega was cruising. Before leaving in the sixth, he scattered six hits across 5.2 innings. While he allowed three runs, only one was earned, and he walked two against three strikeouts.

·  Kubo (0-3) took the loss after allowing two runs, both earned, on three hits with three walks and only one strikeout.

Game Notes:

·  At the start of the game, the Matadors took an early lead in the first inning. After Riker led off with a walk, Bynum blasted a home run just inside of the right field foul pole to make it 2-0. The homer was his second of the season.

·  South Mountain answered with four runs in the second despite only recording one hit. Matador starting pitcher Thomas Shroder struggled with control and hit two batters while walking one. An error, walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases, and Shroder hit Wright to make it 2-1. Jacob Aguilar hammered a two-run double to right field for a 3-2 lead and went to third on the throw home. Markus Montelongo knocked home one more with a grounder to second that made it 4-2.

·  The Matadors grabbed a run back in the bottom of the inning. Makana Victorine hit a one-out double and went to third on a wild pitch. Carlos Higuera hit a groundout to third, but Victorine made it home to cut the lead to 4-3.

·  In the fourth, South Mountain pushed the lead back to two without the benefit of a hit. Wright knocked a grounder through third to reach on an error. After a fielder’s choice and a deep fly ball sent him to third, and he came home on a wild pitch.

·  Another Matador mistake led to a South Mountain run in the fifth. Nelson bunted safely for a leadoff single before stealing second. A deep fly to right field sent him to third, and a balk on Shroder allowed him to score to make it 6-3.

·  Arizona Western trimmed the lead to one in the bottom half of the inning. Chavez rapped his third single of the game with two outs before Zickafoose pounded a home run, his third this year. Chavez finished the game 4-4 with one run scored, a hit by pitch and a stolen base.

·  In the seventh, South Mountain pushed the lead back to two. Montelongo led off with a solo homer that made it 7-5.

·  A seventh inning Matador rally was snuffed out before any damage was done, and the Matadors couldn’t recover. Down 7-5, the Matadors loaded the bases with three straight singles to start the inning from Landon Riker, Scooter Bynum and Franky Chavez. Zickafoose popped up for an infield fly, and Kato hit a soft line drive to first for the second out. Phillips grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.

·  South Mountain whacked home six runs in the ninth inning to seal the game. Dusty Wright’s lead-off triple started the run, and Aguilar singled him home. A single and walk loaded the bases with no outs and chased Matador reliever Adan Vega. Blake Nelson rapped a two-run single off James Goodwin to make it 10-5. Rigo Aguilar knocked home another run with a sacrifice fly, and an error at short kept the inning going. Kiser singled home one more run, and Wright hit an RBI groundout in his second at-bat of the inning to make it 13-5.
