Rindge Memorial Day 2016 Parade Grand Marshal

Retired ColonelJohn Britton

VIETNAM VETERAN

John Britton is honored to represent the men and women of our Armed Services as the Grand Marshal for the 2016 Rindge Memorial Parade.

John is considered a "Mustang" soldier having started at the rank of Private and finishing his thirty-year career in the rank of Colonel. He attributes his success to working for great people and having outstanding service members working with him.

He began his military career in 1959, enlisting as an Air Defenseman. He completed OfficerCandidateSchool in 1960 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry. John's assignments include command of multiple units from platoon through brigade. He has had the distinct honor of conducting multiple joint and coalition assignments to include a joint tour with the US Navy, the Iranian Military, the Vietnamese Airborne and several other countries' military services around the world.

He has also served on the staff for the 8th Army, US Forces Korea , the Department of

the Army, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. His last military assignment was as the Senior Military Advisor to the 26th Infantry Division, Massachusetts. His military education includes Command and GeneralStaffCollege, IndustrialCollege of the Armed

Forces, NavalWarCollege, along with Airborne, Ranger and Special Forces courses. He attended several civilian universities where he earned advanced degrees in Business, Management, and Economics. His awards include the Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars with V Devices and two Purple Hearts. After retiring from the US Army, John pursued a career as a University Professor at SalveReginaUniversity in Newport, RI, where he served as the Chair of the Business Studies Department for both Graduate and Undergraduate Programs.

He was married to wife, Jay, (who is now deceased), for 45 wonderful years. Together they raised two sons: John III, who is a Civil Engineer living in CO; and Jeffrey, a US Army Colonel currently a student at the US Army War College, in Carlisle, PA. John has four grandchildren, Jeffrey (21), who enlisted in the US Air Force; Keagan (16), a High School student; and twins Kelsey and Tyler (12), Junior High School students.
