Conversation Format* from ETS Sample Questions
N:Listen to a conversation between a student and a book store employee.
E:Hi. Can I help you?
S:Umm… yes. I can’t find a book I need for class. Uhh… I found the spot on the shelf where it should be, but there aren’t any there.
E:What book is it?
S:Let’s see… Basic Astronomy… for the Introduction to Astronomy class. I got it all written down here.
E:Thanks. I’ll check the computer. Just a second…I-I-I see it’s sold out. It may be that the professordidn’torder enough copies.
S:I guess I should have come here sooner.
E:Well, classes didstart a week ago. It’s kind of late to be buying books, isn’t it?
S:I know. I joined the class late. Will you be orderingmorecopies of the book?
E:No, I don’t thinkso. This is Professor Bob Johnson’s class, right?
S:Uh-huh.
E:Well, if you’re the only one in classwithout a book and class has already started, I don’t think we’ll be able to get a copy in that quickly. I mean, it takes a while.
S:So, what should I do? I need the book for class.
E:Well, you can alwaystry the bookstore in town. You might find a used copy there.
S:But if I found a used copy, it would probably be an older edition.
E:Well, yeah, if there’s a new edition out, they might not have that one… but you know, I think it’s worth it to check, though.
S:OK. I’ll just have to find out what edition the rest of the class has.
E:Andyou should talk to the professor, too. I mean, explain the problem. You see, if you want to order the book, bookstore policy is that only professors can make requests for book orders. You couldn’t do that by yourself. But it’s like I said. Even if he did that, I’m not surehow fast we could get it.
You know, you could also post a notice in the student center to see if anyone has a copy they’d be willing to sell you.
S:In the student center?
E:You mean you’ve never seen the message board in the student center? Right by the main entrance?
S:I just transferred here and I haven’t had much time…
E:Well, in the student center if you walk through the main entrance, there’s a big notice board. You can’t miss it.
S:All right. I guess I could try that. Hey, you don’t think this book would be in the library, do you?
E:That would be an idea. It probably is, but you do know it would most likely be on reserve, so you wouldn’t be able to take it out of the librarywith you.
S:Mmm. That’s true. Well, I guess I’ll talk to Professor Johnson and…umm… well, thanks for your help.
E:You’re welcome. Good luck.

Well, there are many places I could choose. However, if I had to choose just one place from all of them, I would most certainly choose a movie theater.
* 29 words
To begin with, the movie theater is a great place to enjoy watching movies. I chose this reason because watching movies is one of my hobbies, and on every weekend I have fun watching my favorite movie at the movie theater located in my neighborhood. For example, last weekend I went to the movie theater to watch an American musical comedy-drama film, Annie, which was a really good movie!

Speech Draft* Study Guide p. 38
Well, in my opinion, studying with others is definitely more beneficial for students than studying by themselves.
* 17 words
First of all, if students study with others, they are able to learn much more. This is because they are able to share their knowledge and thoughts with one another. For example, when I was at college, I used to study with my friends. I taught them English and they taught me math, which I was not good at. This way, we were able to learn a lot together.
* 68 words
In addition, when students study with others, they can be more motivated to learn. By studying together, students can have a positive influence on each other, and they will have a greater interest in learning a subject than before.
* 39 words
Therefore, I believe that studying with others is definitely beneficial for students.

13. Presentation
Theme A: Myself
[Opening]
Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Yas Matsuzono. I’m so glad to be here. Today, I’d like to introduce myself to you.
[Content]
Well, I was born in Hiroshima, Japan, and currently live on my own in Kanagawa. I am thirty eightyears old and graduated from the University of Warwick in England ten years ago. Right now, I work full-time as an English teacher at a test preparation school, AGOS Japan, located in the central area of Tokyo. I enjoy doing exercise, watching movies, and reading books. In particular, I like to do exercise using a dance exercise program called “Core Rhythms”, which features sexy Latin dance moves and helps to tighten your entire core!
[Closing]
That’s all I wanted to tell you about myself. Thank you very much for your attention!
Theme B: My best friend
[Opening]
Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Yas Matsuzono. I’m so glad to be here to introduce one of my best friends.
[Content]
Well, his name is Henry. He is from Taiwan, and we went to the same graduate school in England. I clearly remember the very first day that I met him. It was in a common room of our dormitory that we met each other. Soon after he recognized that I am from Japan, he started talking about Japanese comedies because he simply loves them! He mentioned that one of his favorite Japanese comedians was Ken Shimura, who I also love! This is the main reason why we became the best friends! Currently, he is thirty seven years old and working full-time at an electronics company in Taiwan. He likes to play the guitar and to travel abroad.
[Closing]
That’s all I wanted to tell you about Henry. Thank you very much for your attention!
Theme C: The person who I respect
[Opening]
Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Yas Matsuzono. I’m so glad to be here to talk about the person who I admire the most!
[Content]
Well, her name is Sue Wharton. I clearly remember the very first day that I met her in a lecture room. She was a lecturer for my Genre Analysis class when I was a graduate student at the University of Warwick in England. When I first had a look at her face, I immediately thought that her face looked like an American famous movie star, Tom Cruise! To be honest, many of my classmates agreed with my viewpoint. Anyway, she was very intelligent and also very friendly to her students. She helped me a lot when I visited her office and asked for advice about my study problems. She even became my supervisor for my thesis, and she greatly motivated me and gave me clear direction to work on my thesis. If I am given a chance to study for a PhD in the future, I would like her to be my supervisor again.
[Closing]
That’s all I wanted to tell you about Sue. Thank you very much for your attention!
Theme D: Unforgettable experiences
[Opening]
Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Yas Matsuzono. I’m so glad to be here to tell you one of my unforgettable experiences.
[Experience]
A(↑)Ten years ago, I had a chance to join an MA program at the University of Warwick in England for a year. This program gave me an opportunity to attend a lot of valuable lectures, where I was able to meet friendly and intelligent classmates and professors. In particular, Professor Wharton, who was my supervisor for my thesis, was one of the professors who greatly motivated me and gave me clear direction during the study. I hope that if I am given a chance to study for a PhD in the future, I would like her to be my supervisor again.
or
B(↓)About twenty years ago, on a rainy day, an ambulance hit me when I was bicycling on the way to school. I was knocked off my bicycle. The car stopped immediately and the driver anxiously ran up to me to see if I needed any help. Luckily for me, I was not seriously hurt, and my bicycle only received a scratch. Still, I hate to think what might have happened if I had been seriously injured and no one had been around to help me.
