Turpin Band Boosters Mtg.- September 2, 2014

Meeting called to order by Booster President - Kim Mauer.

The meeting started with introductions for all the freshman and new parents. Kim then introduced the new FHIMA President, Andy Lewis. Andy described FHIMA’s purpose, which is to raise funds for all instrumental music groups in the district. FHIMA does provide support to the Turpin Band, which, of course, includes the funds for new uniforms for the band, but also annual support for the Color Guard program. He also noted that FHIMA provides scholarships to students. Andy asked for our help with Band Expo, which is FHIMA’s largest fundraiser and will be occurring October 25. At this point, they are expecting about 16 bands to participate, which is one of the largest competitions that FHIMA has ever hosted. He noted that they still need corporate sponsors and some people to step of for a few chair positions left. Lots of volunteers are always needed! For more information contact Andy Lewis: 513-448-8963 cell or you can find his e-mail on the FHIMA website

SECRETARY’S REPORT: Previous meeting minutes were approved.

Vote to assign Tina Arvizu as new Secretary- APPROVED

TREASURER’S REPORT: Steve Fiora passed out Cash Flow Statements for Sept. 2, 2014.

Budget was explained to new parents. At this point in the TBB fiscal year (which ends June 30), we have already spent more than we have brought in so far, however, this is not usualat this point in the season. In particular, the TBB incurred expenses ($5,883) for redoing the band room, which is much more open and useful. Another significant cost was the lighting installments for this year’s show ($6,000). Kim noted that the TBB’s philosophy is that we want to make sure that the money that we raise for the band benefits the students currently and doesn’t sit in an account. As a result, at the beginning of each fiscal year, all of the funds in excess of $5,000 are put in the Director’s Account, which the directors then can access with TBB consent for current band needs. BUDGET APPROVED

BAND DIRECTOR’S REPORT: Joe Weshe & Shaun Day

Joe gave a big “Thank You” to all the parents in the room for their support. New Lockers in the band room could use a little assistance so looking for volunteers. He explained how this is the first year the Marching Band is a class worth credit. Therefore any time missed will need to be made up via homework (excused absent only). Unexcused absents will be recorded as such.

TRIP- forms due on September 8, 2014, $180 per student or chaperone. Boosters have offset the expense which would have been well over $200. Trip Agenda: Friday leave before last period to beat busses and traffic out. There will be a sub in the band classes for last period. Drive to Kalahari. Saturday drive to Cleveland to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame then dinner at Hard Rock Café. For the Competition we are scheduled for 9:00. Details and exact times/agenda will be forthcoming in the next two weeks. The agenda will also have details on what to pack, luggage drop off and how much meal money can be expected. All forms not in so no idea if additional chaperones are needed.

Band Pictures- Order forms going out this week with kids. Only seniors must have picture taken. This will be our first full dress game performance. All games at 7:00 this year. Two games were listed as 7:30 but this is not correct.

Senior Night- will be October 31, 2014 which is also final home game.

Lockland Competition- Schedule for 5:45 right now, but this may still change. Jersey Mikes graciously offered to donate food for band for this competition. Complete Itinerary will be forthcoming shortly.

STANDING COMMITTEES: Kim Mauer

After prom: Diana Reynolds and Kathy Hengehold chair this committee. Diana reported that the theme this year will be “Reality TV” and the band will be responsible for the cafeteria. Our particular theme will be “Cake Boss.” There will be much more on this as we get closer to the event.

Band Camp: Kim thanked Susan Carson and her team for all of their hard work! Early camp seemed to work well with schedules and nice for kids to have a break before starting school. Joe Wesche wants to get survey but thinks early is better again next year.

Color Guard- Need Liaison for color guard. If you are interested, please contact Kim at .

Fundraising: Kim reminded folks that while Shana Zink is the chairperson for this important role, we need lots of people to help with various fundraising duties. If you would be willing to help with these, please contact Shana Zink at . Shana reports that we have added AMAZON SMILES to our fundraiser list. If you sign up on Amazon, then 5% goes to TBB with every purchase on Amazon. Log on Amazon Smiles and select Turpin Band, and start shopping! The Yankee Candle sale is coming soon, so check with your student or check the website for more information! If you would like a Turpin Bandsticker for your car, please come to a meeting and we will be happy to sell you one for $2 each. Jo Kain, who heads our popcorn sales, noted that they could use some additional hands this year, and reminded us that their student is a senior this year, so that we need someone to step up for this event next year. If you are interested, please contact Jo Kain at .

Hospitality: Karen Schofield is chairing this for us again this year. Karen reported that Jersey Mikes will donate the food for the kids at Lockland Competition, which is great. There will be an opportunity for us to provide additional food for other competitions.

Membership: Debbie Loewenstein- If you have not become a member, we encourage you to do so! It can be confusing sometimes and if your name is not on Debbie’s list, it may be that you signed up for something else (typically, FHIMA or the Turpin Boosters, both of which are great organizations, but not ours!)

Pit Crew: Mike Brinkmiller Props will be pushed by prop volunteers and assembled at each competition. In addition, we need help moving the pit equipment into the stadium. These are two different roles. If you are willing to help, please see the Signup Genius on the Band’s website.

Yard Signs: Mike Brinkmiller Signs are in and can be picked up by new students at any time. There was no cost to the students for these signs. These are a gift of the TBB.

Senior Night at Turpin Football Game: We are in need of someone to help to organize this event. It is not difficult, but it is an opportunity to honor our seniors, and their parents, who have worked so hard. If you would be willing to help with this, please contact Kim at .

OLD BUSINESS

Silent Auction/ Band Blast- Kim reported that although the circumstances were not ideal, the TBB raised approximately $4,500 this year! Keep those items for the Silent Auction baskets coming!

In addition, the audit committee reviewed TBB Treasurer, Steve Fiora’s books, and had no comments. Thank you, Steve, for doing such a great job!

NEW BUSINESS

Nagel Night- We need a volunteer to help run Nagel Night, which is the opportunity for our middle schoolers to see what high school band looks like. This is a very easy position, largely consisting of ordering pizza and delivering T-Shirts. If you would be willing to help, please contact Kim Mauer at .

Trunk –or-Treat- This is scheduled for October 29, 2014 at the end of practice, which will be the last night practice for the marching band. The Wilsons have agreed to chair this fun event again this year! It is a great time for students and parents alike!
