TO DO:

Check the whole route

Eating locations?

Take an unadorned photo of each pub

Vet each pub. Are there any that we desperately do not want to visit?

Time all the intermediate journeys.

Meet 10:30am at Russell Square Station. Take a photo of all the starters. Depart 11am.

Turn left out of the station. Turn right into Herbrand Street, then right again into Bernard Street. Turn left into Marchmont Street. After passing Coram Street on the left, we reach:

M: The Marquis of Cornwallis (1)

31 Marchmont Street, WC1N 1AP

Picked by James B.

Continue along Marchmont Street and cross Tavistock Place as Marchmont Street becomes Cartwright Gardens. Turn right into Leigh Street. Pass Sandwich Street on the left before:

N: The Norfolk Arms (2)

21 Leigh Street, WC1H 9EP

Picked by James B.

Turn right out of the Norfolk Arms and head back to Cartwright Gardens. Turn right to continue north. Cartwright Gardens becomes Mabledon Place. Once you reach Euston Road, turn right for:

E: The Euston Flyer (3)

83-87 Euston Road, NW1 2QU

Picked by Julian

Turn left out of the Flyer and trek along Euston Road until you reach the junction with Gordon Street on the left and Euston Square on the right. Go right and continue walking as Euston Square becomes Melton Street. Take the second left into Drummond Street, then a right into Coburg Street, then a left into Starcross Street for:

X: The Exmouth Arms (4)

1 Starcross Street, NW1 2HR

This is the least dire X we could locate. Originally suggested as a starting point.

Keep along Starcross Street to the end and then turn left into North Gower Street. Follow this all the way back to Euston Road and Euston Square station which is on the other side of the road. Take a Hammersmith & City train to Royal Oak station. Not quite sure where this pub is with respect to the station. Mike should know. May have to cross a railway bridge.

U: The Union (5)

Sheldon Square, W2 6EZ

Mike's suggestion

Return to Royal Oak station and take a Hammersmith & City train to Paddington station.

I: The Isembard (6)

Platform 11, Paddington Station, W2 1HA

This is inside the national railway station.

Leave Paddington station by the front entrance? You should be on Conduit Place or Praed Street. Turn northeast and head in that direction until you hit London Street. Turn right and follow London Street as it becomes Sussex Place. Follow this all the way along until the roundabout where it crosses Strathearn Place on the left. The next pub should be visible from here:

V: The Victoria (7)

2a Strathearn Place, W2 2NH

Mike's suggestion.

Trek all the way back to Paddington tube station and get the next Circle Line train for South Kensington. Get off at South Kensington and you find yourself at a big kite-shaped road junction. Head for the far corner where Old Brompton Road heads southwest. Follow Old Brompton Road, ignore Glendower Place on the right and instead turn right into Bute Street. The next pub is on the right.

Z: The Zetland Arms (8)

2 Bute Street, SW7 3EX

The best Z we could locate. There may be a better, alternate route.

Return to South Kensington Station and take the Circle Line to Westminster. Change to the Jubilee line and carry on to London Bridge station. Turn right out of the station, following Joiner Street, then turn left at Borough High Street (away from the river). Follow along here until you see Newcomen Street on the left. On the right is:

K: The King's Arms (9)

65 Newcomen Street, SE1 1YT

Turn left out of the King's Arms and head back towards the river along Borough High Street. Go left at the fork in the road, cross Southwark Street and turn left into Stoney Street. On the left is:

W: The Wheatsheaf (10)

6 Stoney Street, SE1 9AA

Chosen by James R.

Follow Stoney Street all the way along towards the river and Clink Street. Directions here are a bit hazy, but I think you turn left and Pickford's Wharf is on the left. It's not a huge area, anyway.

O: Old Thameside Inn (11)

Pickford's Wharf, Clink Street, SE1 9DG

Chosen by Julian

Carry on along Clink Street with the river on your right. Turn left into Bankend and on the right is Park Street and:

A: Anchor Pub (12)

34 Park Street, SE1 9EF

Chosen by Julian. "It's really cool as it has many copies of the FT and WSJ on the walls."

The next pub is the Founder's Arms near the Tate Modern. It MAY be possible to reach this pub by following the river bank, but from road maps it's impossible to tell whether this is true or not. (We'll check on the recon.) If not, here's the alternate route. Continue along Park Street as it crosses Southwark Bridge Road and bends around to the left. Turn right at Sumner Street and right again at Holland Street. Follow this as it leads back towards the river and bends around to the right, becoming Hopton Street. The pub is on the left:

F: Founders Arms (13)

52 Hopton Street, SE1 9JH

Chosen by James R.

A good jumping-on point or jumping-off point

The next pub is on Blackfriars Road, a little south of the river. It may be possible to continue along the river bank at this point until you hit Blackfriars Road and then turn south (Again, we'll check on the recon.) If not, the alternate route is: Follow Hopton Street back to where it meets Holland Street and this time take the right fork instead of the left (which you came down). Continue to follow Hopton Street as it bends around to the left and then meets Southwark Street. Turn right here and follow this street until you hit Blackfriars Road. Turn left and look out on the right for:

P: Paper Moon (14)

24 Blackfriars Road, SE1 8NY

Turn left out of the pub and head along Blackfriars Road (towards the river) until you 1) reach Stamford Street and then 2) find the bus stop for the 45 bus headed north. Get on this bus. You'll head almost directly north for quite a while, then make a left turn into Charterhouse Street. Look out for Holborn Circus. This is a big roundabout where Charterhouse meets High Holborn, Holborn Viaduct and three other roads. Ring the bell here and you will be dropped off at bus stop H, just beyond it. Positioned on the circus (just off either Hatton Garden or Ely Place, difficult to tell from the map) is:

Y: Ye Olde Mitre (15)

1 Ely Court, EC1N 6SJ

Requested by Julian since it was part of Cambridge until 1988.

Go back to High Holborn roughly where you should have got off the bus, and this time go to bus stop J and get a different bus headed in the opposite direction, the 341 towards County Hall. This will take you all the way along New Fetter Lane, Fetter Lane, Fleet Street and the Strand. The road will fork confusingly a little; get off the bus at King's College London and continue in the same direction along the Strand on foot. Look out on the far side of the road for:

L: The Lyceum (16)

54 Strand, WC2R 0HS

A Samuel Smith's pub, as requested by Julian

Turn right out of the pub and continue along the Strand. Ignore the turnings for Burleigh Street and Exeter Street on the right and instead turn into Southampton Street on the right, then Maiden Lane on the left. Carry on along here as it morphs into Chandos Place. Look out on the left for:

H: The Harp (17)

47 Chandos Place, WC2 4HS

Carry on a very short distance along Chandos Place and turn left into William IV Street on the left. Follow this and then turn right into Agar Street and right again into the Strand again. You should now be in visual range of Charing Cross tube station, which you should enter. Take a Bakerloo line train to Oxford Circus station and disembark. Turn left out of the station and carry on along Regent Street and then Baynton Meadow until you reach Great Marlborough Street. Turn left into Great Marlborough Street, right into Kingly Street, and carry on along until you see the Red Lion on the left.

R: Red Lion (18)

14 Kingly Street, W1B 5PP

A Samuel Smith's pub, as requested by Julian

Turn left out of the pub, left again in Beak Street, third left into Marshall Street, right into Broadwick Street. On the right is:

J: John Snow (19)

39 Broadwick Street, W1F 9QP

A Samuel Smith's pub, as requested by Julian

Continue along Broadwick Street, passing four roads on the right, until you see, also on the right:

B: Blue Posts (20)

22 Berwick Street, W1F 0QA

Continue to continue along Broadwick Street. Hopefully almost directly opposite the end of the street is:

S: The Ship (21)

116 Wardour Street, W1F 0TT

Turn left out of the pub and head along Wardour Street until you reach Old Compton Street, where turn left again. Follow Old Compton Street until you meet Charing Cross Road. Turn right and on the right is C.

C: The Cambridge (22)

93 Charing Cross Road, WC2H 0DP

Requested by Mike

Continue south along Charing Cross Road. Turn right into Shaftesbury Avenue and walk all the way along here, ignoring four turnings on the right and taking the fifth, Archer Street. Follow Archer Street as it bends ninety degrees left. Turn right in Great Windmill Street, left in Brewer Street. On the left is the next pub.

G: Glasshouse Stores (23)

55 Brewer Street, W1F 9UN

A Samuel Smith's pub, as requested by Julian

Turn left out of the pub and take the first left into Sherwood Street. Take the first left again into Denman Street. On the left is Q.

Q: Queen's Head (24)

15 Denman Street, W1D 7HN

Almost directly across the road on the same street is our penultimate stop.

D: Devonshire Arms (25)

17 Denman Street, W1D 7HS

Nearly there. Continue along Denman Street and cross Shaftesbury Avenue to follow Great Windmill Street south past Piccadilly Circus, where Great Windmill Street morphs into Haymarket. On the left is Panton Street.

T: Tom Cribb (26)

36 Panton Street, SW1Y 4EA

You can call it a night here, but to actually complete the crawl you now need to return to Piccadilly Circus for a triumphant survivors' photo.
