MDC Live Arts Launches New Space During Downtown Art Days

The Live Arts Lab will be a Catalyst for Innovation in the Arts

Miami, Aug. 30, 2016 – Miami Dade College’sacclaimed (MDC) MDC Live Arts, Miami’s most eclectic performing arts series, celebrates the launch of its new creative space, The Live Arts Lab,at 6:30 p.m., onFriday, Sept. 9, during Downtown Art Days. This event is free and open to the public.

MDC Live Arts is now the proud manager of the 120-seat theater at MDC’sWolfson Campus (Bldg. 1), which formerly housed Teatro Prometeo. With Teatro Prometeo now located at MDC’s historic Koubek Center, the Lab will host several programs for local working artists and MDC students, including TestLab, a monthly event briefly showcasing and providing critical feedback about new work; LabChat, discussions about arts topics within the community and with guest artists; and the Live Arts Lab Alliance (LALA), which will support a cohort of artists in residence in the Lab for the creation, feedback, and showcasing of new work.

The launch celebration will include showcases by local artists who have participated in MDC Live Arts trainings in the past. The line-up includesdancer Pioneer Winter in Gimp Gait, a solo for two; The Biscayne Poet, a musical poetry performance by Oscar Fuentes; multidisciplinary artists David Rohn / Danilo de la Torre(aka Adora of Miami drag fame): LABOMAMO in KamelBak: war and terror as cultural events, including a fashion show; Marie Whitman’s(Inter)Seed, a fusion of spoken word, sacred song and meditative movement that is part public performance and part intimate ritual; dancer Michelle Grant Murray’s Fossils of Memory, an exploration of rice consumption, rice cultivation and it's intersectionality with the Black Female Body; spoken word artist Dru Phoenix from The Combat Hippies performing excerpts from Conscience Under Fire, veterans’ stories of Post-traumatic Growth; and PATH Hip Hop SummerAcademy alumni and students performing Iam, Battle of the Year, and more!

The launch will be preceded and followed byDJ music and mingling in and around the theater.
