Current Events: On Tuesday, we met Ms. Myrtetus and had her assisting us throughout the day. Thursday, we celebrated our 100th Day of school adding tens and writing about what we would do with $100. Thanks to all our families who donated items for our special snack of 100 munchies!I’m really proud of how far the children have come since the fall! Thanks for all the nightly support that you’ve given to your child with re-reading, practicing Fry words, and math facts! Continue to practice addition and subtraction facts to 18 to get that instant recall of the answer, which is still an area needing to be stronger for many students. Plus, skip counting by twos and counting down from 30 are math skills that need reinforcement and practice at home, too.

Language Arts:As we complete the Handwriting strokes, learning all the upper and lower case letter strokes. Now, our focus will turn to using the correct strokes as we put more emphasis on our written composing (ideas & organization), expression (voice, word choice, & sentence fluency), and usage/mechanics (conventions) of writing. Initially, we will learn about the editing marks that will be used on rough draft writings for edited re-writes and practice this using daily editing review sentences, where we will use a sentence to mark with editing marks and then rewrite the sentence corrected without any of the mistakes.

Math: Working with place value and an introduction to pattern were the focus of this week. Using place value will continue into next week as we compare the numbers that we make on our place value mats and add vocabulary and symbols for less than, greater than, and equal. Counting to 100 by 2’s and counting down from 30 are skills that we are practicing to recite instantly, as well as working on using strategies to quickly add factsthat add 10 more, as well as counting on ones to tens.

Social Studies:In our Scholastic News, “We Have a New President,” the children watched a video clips about the White House and Air Force One and then read about the responsibilities of being the President of the USA. Using a map of the White House, the children practiced their map reading skills, responding to questions about the White House map.

Science:With Mrs. Flint, the children have been learning about day, night, and shadows through experiments, stories, and video clips.
