Math 227 Statistics Project

Math 227 – Statistics ProjectPRESENTATION OF PROJECT

Project must be typed and must include the following:

  1. Title page (should be the cover on its own):

Choose a title that is related to your question (title is not “Math 140 project”).

Name

Class and section number

Semester and year

B. Introduction – State what your question is and state what you intend to find. State the purpose of the project and why you chose this question. You may include brief research on your question if applicable. For example state the following in context to your project. We took a sample of about 40 college students to find out some information about the typical college student at this campus.

C. Statistical Analysis

Include the following in your report using StatCrunch (or any other statistical technology) for computations. (No hand calculations for any part of the project are allowed.) Copy and paste all computer outputs. No manually typed outputs are accepted.

Section I

  1. Copy of Raw Data from excel including gender (we will do this together in class).
  2. Include the following graphs for the entire group: histogram, dotplot, boxplot
  3. Provide the summay statistics (copy and paste).
  4. Write a summary of what you found for the entire group. Include shape, only best measure of center, only best measure of spread and comment on any outliers. Make sure to quote the numerical results as well.

Section II

Conduct 68%, 95% and 99.7% Confidence Intervals for the data to show how confident you are that you have captured the true mean for the group. Give an explanation of you have found in context to your question.

Section III

1. Provide summary statistics by gender. Make a side by side boxplot for males and females. Compare the two groups. Include comparison of the medians, typical spreads (middle 50%), overall spread, outliers, etc.

2. Conduct a hypothesis test comparing the means between genders for your question using a significance level α = 0.05

Ho: µm = µf

Ha: µm ≠ µf

Make sure to write your conclusion in context with your question.

Comment on whether there is a significant difference among genders in the response to your question?

3. Find the 95% CI on the difference and explain how this supports the conclusion of your hypothesis test.

D. Conclusion-Write a brief closing paragraph summarizing what you found. Include any bias/confounding variables that could mislead you in your analysis. Include whether your response was typical or unusual.

You may email your report as well. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance if you have any questions.
