General Introduction

Tiphereth is part of the Camphill Movement. We are a small semi-rural community based on the outskirts of Edinburgh at the foot of the Pentland Hills. Tiphereth provides both residential and day care for adults with learning disabilities. For more information on the community please go to

Together we make up a community of about 100 people. We have three residential community houses and three day service working groups.

  • The May Group havetwoarts and crafts studios and a kitchen where meals for their group are prepared.The group do weaving, felting, painting, card making, paper making, jewellery, furniture restoration and a variety of other projects, interspersed with music, singing and walking.
  • The Pentland Garden Group carry out environmental projects both in the local and wider community and offers a therapeutic hands-on organic gardening experience with a remit to care for and enhance the community gardens. The group also operate Colinton Community Compost, a green waste collection and compost processing scheme on behalf of City of Edinburgh Council.
  • The Peregrine Group goes out into the wider community to support other environmental organisations in their work, for example doing planting, path building, stone wall mortaring.

For those who benefit from or need more intensive support an appropriate level of support and care is provided.

Responsibilities

The post holder is responsible to Day Service Co-workers, Co-ordinators, then to the Day Service Management and through this to the Directors of Tiphereth Ltd.

The maternity cover Day Service assistant co-worker will work as part of a team that is led by the Day Service Manager andsupported by group Co-ordinators.

This post is based in the May Group, working mainly indoors on arts and crafts activities, however the post holder will work in any of the day service groups as required, including the outdoor based groups, and will have the flexibility to respond to changes in routine at short notice.

Thekey tasks of the care assistant co-worker are

  • To uphold Tiphereth’s values, aims and objectives
  • To support day attendees to work on artistic tasks and projects, as requested by co-workers and co-ordinators.
  • To provide with dignity and respect, all aspects of personal care to meet the needs of individual Day Attendees
  • To assist co-workers in taking responsibility for the proper use and setting up of all tools, equipment and materials used in workshops and activities
  • To keep the Co-ordinators and other co-workers informed regarding any issues in the routine or care for Day Attendees as they arise
  • To be responsible for the cleanliness of workshops and areas used by Day Attendees and to assist daily in all cleaning tasks as directed.
  • To facilitate and participate at meal times in ensuring that all Day Attendees needs are met and supported
  • To accompany Day Attendees outside of the community for work, walks, trips, outings and appointments and to assist co-workers in ensuring they have appropriate clothing, equipment and medication they may need

Cultural/community tasks

  • To assist in the celebration of festivals with the community – this rich cultural life is central to Tiphereth as a Camphill Community
  • To assist Day Attendees to actively participate in the cultural life of the community
  • To assist in creating a harmonious working environment and towards maintaining a safe and pleasing space in which to work

Training and Supervision

There is an initial period of induction for new staff. Support and appropriate further training or refresher courses in on- going training and professional development will be agreed with the Day Service Manager and within the wider Tiphereth community. Staff will be expected to achieve and maintain registration with the SSSC (Scottish Social Services Council), when this is required, and adhere to the SSSC Code of Practice.

The maternity cover Day Serviceassistant co-worker has access to supervision and support sessions with the Day Service Manager where issues of concern or those needing clarification can be raised, and where practices can be reflected.

There is a monthly Tiphereth Meeting held on Monday evenings either from 7.00pm -9.00pm or between 4pm-6pm (alternating). These meetings address both business and cultural issues within the community as a whole.The assistant care co-worker is expected to attend along with all members of the community.

Tiphereth is committed to the Scottish Executive’s Safe Recruitment Policy.Tiphereth is required to carry out checks on your work and personal references, and also Enhanced Disclosure Scotland checks through membership of the PVG scheme. All offers of employment are subject to these checks being completed to Tiphereth’s satisfaction.

Theannual salary, paid in monthly installments, is£13,768 - £14,897 depending on experience.

Tiphereth operates a Stakeholder Pension Scheme with CIS Insurance, which you have the option to join. Tiphereth contributes a sum equivalent to 2.5% of each month’s gross salary on behalf of the Employee after the employee has completed 6 months of service. This is subject to review annually in September with any increases awarded in October the following year.

Sick pay is paid at the statutory rate.

You will be entitled to 36 days paid holiday per annuminclusive of statutory and public holidays. You are required to take your holidays at the same time as the Day Service closures unless otherwise approved by the Day Service Manager. Any request to take holidays at other times should be made as early as possible, and may be referred to college for a decision. Tiphereth cannot guarantee that holidays at other times will be available. The dates of the Day Service holidays will be released on an annual basis in September. The leave year is 1 October to 30 September.

Your working hours are Monday - Friday 8.45am until 4.15pm with the exception of a team meeting on Thursday which usually continues to 5pm.

The duration of this temporary maternity cover post is either nine months or one year. This is the choice of the permanent post holder who is on maternity leave.
