Social Studies 30: Quizzes and Assignments
The course contains four online quizzes to be completed on WebCT, along with six assignments to be completed in class, this page will allow you to be prepared for these tasks as they are run through in class.
Assignment 1:Imagine you are unemployed during the Great Depression, in a group of 4, discuss what options are available to you before and after the New Deal. Make a list of the various New Deal programs and how they can be used to your advantage. As a group, prepare a completed chart, which outlines the various New Deal programs, like the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Public Works Administration and the effectiveness they will have on your plight.
Assignment 2:Again in a group of 4, discuss the inherent problems in Europe that came out from World War 1. Discuss the effects of the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression, and the damaging effects of war on countries such as Italy, Germany, Russia, France and Britain. Prepare a report that explains the problems each country was facing, and some reasons why each country moved in the direction each one did. Give a list of strengths and weaknesses of each country’s political direction after World War 1.

Assignment 3:Individually, prepare a timeline of the build up to World War 2. Include any events that you feel are relevant, and explain why they are important. Include the people who were involved, the countries involved, and the effects of each action in helping to create the conditions for the war.
Assignment 4:With a partner, discuss what were the events that helped turn the tide of the war. Include important battles, political decisions, and actions that led to the war’s eventual outcome. Give a report explaining why these events were crucial in the eventual victory for the Allies.

Assignment 5:The Cold War had a long lasting impact on the 20th Century. In a group of 4, explain the consequences of the Cold War on the political systems of the world. Include the main political systems that evolved during this time, including socialism, communism, capitalism, anarchism, totalitarianism, democracy, and monarchies. Explain how each of these political systems developed during the Cold War in a written report, that includes a timeline of important Cold War events.

Assignment 6: With a partner, describe the realities of the New World Order as have developed since the fall of Communism. Look at issues of globalism, ethnic nationalism, poverty, and war. Give a report on these issues and some of the things that have been done to address them.
