CLASSROOM RULES:

1. Students should be in class, with required materials, ready for class to begin when the bell rings.

2. Students should take care or personal needs (locker, water, and bathroom) before school, between

classes, at lunch or after school. You will not be allowed to leave class during class time.

3. Attendance has a major impact on success in a math class. Students should strive to be in class

everyday; however, if an absence is necessary, it is the student’s responsibility to determine what has

been missed and to turn it in within 3 days of returning to school. If you are absent on a test day,

you are responsible for making up the test within one week. Missing test will need to be made up

before school, lunch time or after school, not during class time. Otherwise, you will receive a ZERO.

4. NO food or drink (not even water) are permitted in the classroom. (THIS IS SCHOOL POLICY.)

5. Cell phones should be kept out of sight during class time unless you are asked to use them!

Bell Ringers, Classwork, and your Notebook:

At the beginning of class there will be a “bell ringer” or warm-up on the board or tv. You should begin solving the warm-up questions in your notebook as soon as the bell rings. At times these problems will be collected and counted as a grade. Similarly, practice problems or worksheets given after notes may also be collected and counted as a grade. It is important that you keep an organized notebook for this class!!

Homework

Unlike in previous math classes, I will not check and go over every homework problem from the night before. After the warm up, I will allow you time to compare answers and ask questions of your classmates. If you can explain your solution and process to others, it will increase your understanding of the material as well as help you practice what to say (and eventually write on the AP exam) in order to make your explanations clear to others. If everyone has trouble with a particular question, then I will go over that question with the entire class. Sometimes I will collect homework in order to give you feedback on work completed.

Calcul-extra

In order to make sure that you are keeping up with your work, and to save classtime, you will be given a calcul-extra assignment for each unit. The calcul-extra will consist of vocabulary as well as some practice problems from the unit. The vocabulary should be completed prior to a lesson so that we do not spend classtime going over simple definitions. The practice problems should be completed as we learn the material. All Calcul-extra assignments are due on test day and will count in the homework category for a grade.

AP Problems

In addition to the regular assignments, you will have AP problems due at the end each week beginning in September. You will have an assignment sheet listing the due dates for these for the entire course. It is your responsibility to turn them in by the due date. Not all due dates occur on days that you will have this class, so you are responsible for turning it in before 3:40 on the days you are NOT scheduled to see me for class.

Preparing for the AP Examination

To help develop confidence with the format of the AP exam, I incorporated multiple-choice and free-response questions into each test. Several practice examinations will be given throughout the year. In April, all discussion of new topics is completed and we begin a concentrated review for the exam. Another practice examination is given one week before the actual AP examination. (This practice exam will count as the students final exam grade since AP scores will not be back prior to the mailing of report cards.) After taking that exam, we can focus on topics that appear to need reviewing the most.

Students need to take practice tests under examination conditions. The examination time for the AP Calculus Examinations will be 3 hours and 15 minutes. The multiple-choice section of the examinations will be 45 questions. In part A of the multiple-choice section (28 questions in 55 minutes), students are not allowed to use calculators. Part B of the multiple-choice section (17 questions in 50 minutes) contains some questions for which a graphing calculator is required. The free-response section consists of two parts totaling 6 questions. Part A is calculator active and has two questions to be completed in 30 minutes, and the Part B section is calculator-free and contains 4 questions to be completed in 1 hour. Students may go back to Part A of the free-response questions but they cannot use their calculator after the first 30 minutes.

FINAL EXAM:

Your final exam grade will be a project that will be completed after the AP exam.
