Decision-making style / Definition / Example
Background: An individual walks past a store with a sale on a particular pair of sports shoes.
Impulsive / A logical and sensible approach. Information is gathered, alternatives carefully considered, and outcomes and consequences evaluated prior to an individual making their final choice. / The individual goes into the store, has a look at the sports shoes on special, and look at others as well. They probably leave the store, think about it some more and go into the store the following day. They may delay purchasing the sports shoes until they go into other stores. They continue to ponder over the decision and may even decide not to purchase the sports shoes at all because it is so hard to decide.
Intuitive / A hasty decision is usually made spontaneously, without considering the alternatives or outcomes. / The individual makes a judgement about buying the sports shoes without much reasoning. They base their decision on their inner feelings and may take time to make their choice.
Hesitant / The decision is made with certainty and trust. Alternatives have been identified and outcomes wisely evaluated to ensure that the best decision has been made. / The individual gathers information on the sports shoes, investigates sports shoes available in a range of stores and then considers whether or not the sports shoes on sale are the best ones to purchase.
Confident / Based on instinct or ‘gut-feeling’. The decision made is the right one at the time. / An individual asks very few questions, does not compare styles or brands and purchases the sports shoes. They probably have not considered buying sports shoes until walking past this store.
Rational / Delay making a decision. They are indecisive about which alternative is best and procrastinate about the choice. / The individual asks questions about several styles and brands, as well as sports shoes on sale. Then they make a purchase and feel satisfied with their decision.
